It’s the federal government’s way of standardizing the ID process by adding extra layers to prove you are who you say you are. Some states over the years have been subpar on the gathering or requirements of the info to properly ID people and issue a DL. California is one of the states who sucks at this.Explain to me why I all of a sudden have to have a real ID to fly domestic and my current ID won't work as it has for many years? What is the difference? No one has been able to give me a straight answer. And don't tell me it is more secure and federally recognized because that is the only answers I've got, even from the dmv. If that is the answer see post 14. If it's so much different and better then why do I still need a passport to fly internationally? Shouldn't this "federally recognized" "real ID" be sufficient? Yes I will end up getting one when I have to renew but it makes zero sense! JMO
Technically, undocumented immigrants cannot be issued a Real ID. There are loop holes as others have mentioned, but I hope to see this as a benefit to the American people.
To fly internationally, a state issued ID along with the extra safety measures are not recognized by other countries. Hence the need for a passport that is issued by the government. Other countries recognize this and use it to ensure who is entering and exiting their countries. It’s one of the few items all countries can agree on.
I don’t make the rules, but following these easy steps makes travel quite easy. Also, just get a Sentri card or Global Entry. Both cards are recognized by the TSA and CBP and add an extra layer of security that ease the international domestic travel program. A known traveler number is worth its weight in gold if you travel for your career or for pleasure.
