Once something is anodized one color (purple) can you anodize it again another color (red), or am I limited only to powder coating over anodized?

You can have it stripped and then anodized again. If possible stay away from red on anno and powdercoating.

I'm no expert, but I think you would want to deanodize it first, re-polish it, then do it. I remember my brother used to use nail polish remover and bleach mixed together to get rid of anodization, but I think the mixture is extremely toxic and can take fingers off.

Paul,

If you are going to re-anodize another color, the anodize shop can strip the existing coating before they redo it. Sulfuric anodize is only about .0003" thick, so you can polish it off or blast to remove if needed. Or, you can have someone powdercoat right over the existing anodize after cleaning. Most powdercoating shops will give it a light grit blast to clean which will also remove old sulfuric anodize (hard anodize is a thicker and takes a litttle more to remove it, but if it's colored it is standard Ty 2 sulfuric.

Hope this helps.

Depending on how many parts you have, the shop that will be doing the ano will more than likely strip it for you for free. I have had stuff stripped while I waited, it doesn't take that long.

Taking it a step further, most ano shops now do polishing in house so in theory you could just drop off your old junk and pick it back up looking like new!

Dunham Metal in Orange is who I have used in the past.

Dunham is good and also does a lot of production parts for us. If you go the powdercoating route, make sure they strip or "rough up" the piece first. Anodizing is sealed and does not adhere well. If we coat parts after anodize, we do not seal them. Also speaking of coatings and anodize, ask for the best sealer you can get or double-seal if you anodize because most do not offer UV protection if they are going to be exposed. So your black will turn purple-ish, reds to pink, etc?? No one wants a pink steering wheel, right?

I heard easy off (oven cleaner) will take the ano off.
