Redid my back yard a couple years ago. Did sod. Having two dogs plus family member dogs and living in a drought stricken state, it looks like shit!

Anyone done the artificial grass thing? I know there are rebates from my water company, but they are like 10% of the cost to install plastic grass.

What is it like in summer? Hot for the dogs? Smell like piss and shit? Color fade quickly or lasts a while?

It looks like $20 a square foot is the going rate!!!

Or I just re sod for $800 and be done for a year or so...

I have it in my yard. It's expensive but always perfect. The biggest problem is that it gets hot, very hot. Looks good but you can't go on it in the summer and the dogs won't even go on it.

I have artificial turf with one dog , make sure that they use the right infill or you will have the smell of piss . When my was install they used a infill called Zeo fill which has controlled the odor and also I use Pe-51 deodorizer on the grass too . go www.zeofill.com to get all the info on it .

It was 90 today, anything over 80 makes it uncomfortable. I'm in a valley 20 miles from the beach. An if you do install heed Yard Dogs advice

I live in Havasu , and we have a shade over the turf like the one at Car Toys in Havasu were they wipe down the cars , but a lot smaller .At 115 outside it stays cool enough that my dog will walk on the turf and lay down on it . I have about 300 sq feet .

Fake grass is un american! My buddy has it here in Phoenix with 2 dogs and his entire yard smells like piss. Plant it, mow that shit, drink a beer, be a man!!

NO problems with my turf you have to use the right infill , no water, no mowing , no brown spots from the grass being piss on , which means you can drink all the beer you want without doing no work at all :D

It smells bad if as others have said you don't wash it and you don't have them put in a good backfill.

A little soap and water will not clean the piss/shit smell. You need an enzymatic cleaner that will break down the shit/piss.

I've played football an artificial turf. Ran back a 98 yard touchdown and literally thought my feet were on fire

I just put a pool in and a little fake grass. So far no problem. My dogs roll around on it. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1405524552.061310.jpg t ImageUploadedByTapatalk1405524584.523931.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1405524600.402021.jpg
And it looks great.

The grass itself isn't so expensive, it is all the prep work that needs to be done first. Dig out the old grass, then a few inches of dirt, backfill with DG or sand, compact it, then grass install with lots of nails...then sand it with expensive green sand, and brush it in. It is not like just laying carpet.

It does get hot in the summer, but if you want to sit out in the winter it works nicely to keep you warmer. I did large putting green.

My friend has her whole back yard done and has two dogs. She has odor problems. Maybe you can train the dogs to use a part of the yard that you leave natural.

I just also signed up for the rebate to remove the lawn. They will give us up to $1500 to do it, but they don't allow artificial turf as a substitute. We are less than two miles from La Jolla Shores.

I did it a couple of years ago, laid a 12x60 ft area in the upper yard. I bought it from a place that buys remnants from all the major manufactures. Cost about $1200 and another $500 for silica sand. We have two dogs and it still looks great. there is little smell, but if you pick up after them it's not to bad. As for heat it hasn't been bad, the dogs will go lay out when we are in the pool on it, and I've never thought my feet were on fire. I think the big thing with heat and odor are what you use as your infill material.

I have just one dog now(140lb) he pees a lot on it. When it gets real hot I just hose it down with a little dawn dish washing soap in a sprayer, works great. They laid little river rock pebbles first then some type of sand I love it but you do have to keep it clean.... Oh I live in Vegas and it gets hot once in a while lol.

I have a real Bermuda lawn and it takes quite a bit to maintain and so lately I have been thinking about shrinking my work load. I have always preferred the Fairway look of Bermuda and the artificial versions are awesome looking. Not high on the priority list though.:)

I have both, fake and real... I think between cleaning the leaves that get locked in it and constantly washing it down( for the dog issues) seems it's about the same as my Bermuda... And the heat is ridiculous! My dogs won't walk on it during the summer which suck because that was the whole reason for it. Although my 250.00 water bill sucks too!

I'm looking at specifically the K9grass. No rubber bits. Supposedly not as much heat. I'll know more Tuesday after they come for an estimate.

With the local water company giving $1.50 a foot to tear out turf and another $1.50 for artificial it will ease the pain but I'm sure the cost will be $11 to $12 a foot...

I had a marathon sod backyard, it lasted a year before my 2 boxers wore thru to the dirt. When they run, the kick up a 6' high r0oster tail of ground cover. Im trying to figure out what to do around my hypothetical pool, either all concrete or some small planters / limited grass. I'd be interested in the artificial grass but the heat in the valley gets over 100 regularly in the summer

I have a guy coming out to quote us for artificial grass. We have 300 s.f. the stuff they are suggesting a special infill and a french drain to protect from dog urine smell. We have to replace the grass every year because our dog piss ruins it. I've read all the feedback. Curious to see what kind of price we get.

Got the job done and couldn't be happier. Worth every penny. Thinking of getting the front yard done. They have a program in CA for solar and artifical grass that us a tax right off and paid through property taxes. Hero program

Does anyone have a hook up or know someone that does this in the IE? I have a friend with a small front area that wants it done like now, he has only had some flakes show up so far I guess.
