I know for a freakin fact that there's a shit load of dog lovers on this board so...............
04-1996 to 03-06-2008
Born in April of 1994 in Holland. Coming from a stellar line of European hunting champs, he was purchased in Germany in late 1994 for the Palm Springs Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue.
At nine months old, with no training, he was the youngest work dog I'd ever trained. The dogs we used for police patrol, narcotics, explosives etc were usually around 18 months old. More mature and didn't come with the typical puppy problems.
After careful consideration, we decided to go with the 9 month old.
Thousands of hours, literally, went into training Bautz to be the best search dog in the Nation. In his day he was the king. If you were lost, or trapped under a collapsed buidling, you'd want Bautz to be the dog searching for ya.
09-11-2001.........................
We were dispatched to Ground Zero first thing in the AM. When we arived, we found three live humans...........Unfortunatley, they were dead by the time they were reached. Way too much rubble to remove before they died.
Searching, is what he did. He'd been trained over and over and he never knew when to quit. QUIT - was not in his vocabulary.
I worked him so hard for days on end that he finally hit a wall. He was so dehydrated that he had me a little worried. After a brief visit from a vet and 2 liters of fluid via IV, he was back at work, searching for survivors. BTW, 2 liters of fluid for a 50 lb dog is....a lot.
Anyhow, this ain't a 9-11 thread, so I'll just say he was one hard working sumbitch for ten days. Leave it at that.
After he retired from the PSFD, he was allowed to just be a dog. He loved going to the river.
Fast forward to a few months ago. At our river house.............he would make countless kids smile from ear to ear by finding them when they would hide from him around the park. They'd be in total awe when he'd find them when they did their best to hide from "the fire dog".
Long story short......Bautz Vom Reuben was an icon. He was hands down THE BEST search dog in the entire nation, and he was an excellent diplomat for the Palm Springs Fire Department, and for FEMA.
On Thursday, March 6th, I had to make a decision to put him down. We woke up in the AM to find him not being his normal self. A quick trip to the vet told us he had soem pretty extensive cancer in his abdominal cavity. Surgery was an option, but, at 14 years old and absolutely no guarantee of healing, I opted for putting him down. He was too ill to have a normal dogs life.
He died at 1:15 PM, March 6th, 2008.
God Bless ya Bauts. You made a shit load of people happy in your time.
