"my old lady" or "my old man". Is it just me or is this a total lack of respect towards your significant other? Maybe it is a personal thing but I really feel that it is so disrespectful, it makes me cringe when I hear guys call their wifes "my old lady". I don't know, maybe I'm told old fashioned???

Agree with you 100%. Have a few here at work that refer to their wives like that and it just makes me cringe everytime they say it.

It's a lack of respect for someone you're supposed to care about. Kinda Redneck if you ask me...

"The Wifey" is what I use.

And she prefers being called Mrs. A term I thought was gone but is making a comeback.

I agree, I never heard my dad call my mom that. When I hear men call their wives or girlfriends that, any respect that I might have had for them goes straight out the window. Sounds too redneck to me.

My Dad taught me to very important lessons in life, #1 was to be a man, #2 was to be a gentleman, he did a great job a teaching me both, I still open doors, offer to get that beverage of choice, carry the heavy bags etc..., it seems that our society has started to slack on the way that we treat one another, it is a very sad to me...

I never really viewed it that way.. Rio got after my shit for calling my pops "My old man" I always thought it was a term of endearment. I know of a few other guys that have very close relationships with their fathers, and use the term.

As far as my chick is concerned.. Well she's my chick, chickie, chickie doodle, etc.. LOL

just for curiosity.. where does ball n chain fit into all of that? Respectful? :D

In terms of your father I think its acceptable and quite endearing but for a spouse/significant other I think its derogatory and shows a lack of respect, rather more like a possession. Many guys have much nicer names for their cars/boats.

WTF?

My wife and I have used that for years, and wink or laugh when we do...to coin a phrase from Sergeant Hulka, "lighten up Francis!"

Skank, it was irritated before...:D

Ol' lady was hip and cool in the 70s. I remember my dad calling mom that...right before the divorse.

Now it sounds like a retrograde biker deal.

I have refered to my Pops as "my ol man or old man " since I was a kid, always as a name of endearment & deep respect :thumbsup however, I would NEVER refer to my Mom as "my ol lady" especialy when in arm's reach of my "ol man" at age 82 he can STILL beat knots on my head quicker then I can rub 'em ! Same can be said of Mrs. Skyskier :eek:
After 35 + years of marriage sometimes refering to Mrs. Skyskier as "my wife" just doesn't seem to cover it

I always thought it was trashy sounding and disrespectful. My dad used to call my mom that, not sure if he still does :hmm I prefer "my man" rather than "my old man" :D and I'm "his girl". If I heard him call me his old lady, I'd kick him in the junk and take his money. :beer

Cindy is my wife, or "Cin".
Dad and mom never used the terms in question.
A lot is in the meaning, but the terms do seem alittle retro to me, (49 yrs.old)
If you want to hear some funny stuff, ask around and find out what nickname your kids have for you.
My 23 year old son told me just recently that he and his pals have had nicknames for all us dads, have had them for years.
I am "BigGuns"
My pal John is "Chopper"
My pal Jim is "Heat"
It even got to the point that my #2 son is now called "Minguns". He even has that as a greeting on his damn cell phone.

RD, I want you to know how much I appreciate that. I'm proud of you.

With me it's just a respect thing. Have never used it in reference to parents, wives girlfriends, either mine or yours. Don't know how my Dad would have responded to it. Wish he was still with me so I could ask him.

Rio

I called my Dad "Pops" most of the time, and he'd always reply "I'll POP you!", but it never stopped me from doing it; it was a little shittalking thing we had goin. Like I'd throw him the bird, and he'd ask "you gotta 'nother one'a them?", so I'd throw up bird #2, and he'd say, "stick both of them up yur ass and spin around on your elbows." Never meant any disrespect by it, cuz I know he'd put me on my ass if he didn't like it, it was more of a routine we'd do.

I don't call my wife Old Lady just because I have a few other nicknames for her that are already in rotation & it never really struck me as an accurate title for her (i'll get back to you on our 30th anniversary :D ), but I do use it for description purposes when I'm tellin a story, "his old lady works over there...." and the like, but I don't mean any disrespect by it, But I'll be a little more aware of it now............Who am I kiddin, Fuq'em if they can't take a joke :D

I think now days calling your wife by "my wife" is insulting to a lot of women
I was told it makes her sound like a possession

I think if both are happy with whatever you call each other then every one els should mind there own business

Same here, my Dad wouldn't have it any other way. To this day if he thought I was being disrepectful to my wife he would knock me up side my head, he is 71 this year.

From my Old English dictionary in part.

Old,
.....Often Ol'
Familiar, accustomed: in plenty, in exess, or wonderful: a general word of familiar or affectionate approbation or contempt,........

I use the term Ol' lady all the time around my friends I never say OLD lady. Ol' or Ole is a term of endearment as in Ol' Glory or Grand Ole Opry. I was just wondering if every body else uses OLD or OL' / OLE?

my wife hates that term...I never use it anyway but we have talked about the fact some people do.. The funny part is she doesn't care at all when I call her a C*NT (jokingly of course)...she thinks the C word is funny

She always calls me a crackwhore (sexual not drugs) I guess cuz I will do anything to get in her pants..:D:D I thought it was a funny nick name so I put it on my boat...

I don't find the term derogatory or disrepectful at all, especially if it's used in proper tone. It's not a literal term to me, it has nothing to do with being old, it's just an old fashioned slang.
