They get better gas milage than that. My buddy use to tow his 27 Ultra shadow with his Denali and he got 8 while towing. If I remember right they get about 12 most of the time.

It has to do with overall performance. A chevy 6.0 towing a boat will smoke your shit empty. They just use up the gas doing it. I have been looking for a solution to my mpg problem though, and a duramax is my only solution

My Sierra Denali get's 13.9 on average. Pulling my Boat. less for sure. It has a Vortec 6000. Intake and Exhaust upgrades. Its Great on Tire wear due to Rear wheel Steering. Nearly 100,000 on each set of tires.

Steve, Except for my level kit and 34" my stock 2002 Excursion Diesel 4x4 gets an average of 14/14.5 in the city and 16/17 on the highway when not driven agressively, when towing in the city I get around 12 and roughly 13/15 on the highway depending on the weight..and I can guarantee the diesel 7.3 will out pull and out last any gas engine truck.

Same here, 13.8 with a Sierra Denali AWD Quadrasteer.

I can't believe people still daily drive trucks. The only way I could justify daily use of a truck is if that truck was making me $10 for every $1 worth of gas it burned.

At $4 a gallon and 12 MPG I would spend $600+ a month on gas alone. $600 a month covers my car payment, gas and insurance for the month

I have 4wd with the 6.0 i get about 12 around town and can get as much as 14 on hwy.

What kills the mpg on highway is over 70 empty and 60 towing.I tow my toyhauler and good conditions i can get 9mpg but avg about 8mpg.With lance camper on and towing my boat if i keep at 55-57 i can go 250 miles on a tank if i kick it to 65 barely make it 200 miles.

As far as reliability i have a work teuck with one 12ft flatbed always has material on it starts off with around 2k in material everyday. It has 273k on it.Had a trans replaced at 158k front pump went out,and at 265k we had to have some exhaust manifold bolts replaced since some broke, and had the front end rebuilt nothing else done but oil changes still has stock water pump and injectors.

I can't say enough good things about my 2002 250HD 6.0 but if you are splitting hairs about the cost of fuel then it is not for you. I would get as much as 15 mpg not towing back and forth to Havi, now about 13.5-14mpg because it has 96k miles on it. Towing my 4k lbs boat & trailer I get 11 to 12.

My roundtrip commute is 28 miles streets and stop and go freeway and I get about 11. It is my daily driver because I can't justify a third car and leave a nice truck sitting for the few times a year I need to tow haul cargo.

The problem with many 2500 HD's isnt the truck it is the driver. Lot's of people drive them like they are sports cars. When you do that, you will pay for it.

Thats why my '02 Tundra sits during the week and only gets driven on Saturday to keep the battery charged. Now that boating season is here I intend to use the truck more often.

The 6.0 will kill your pocketbook when used to tow. I have a 03 2500hd 4x4 that averages 11 based on the onboard computer. I refuse to calculate the mpg while towing because it is to depressing. My guess is it is around 8 when towing my 26' Ultra. I am in the same boat as you. I want to take some road trips this summer to powell and havasu but don't want to pay the pump. I have been looking at 2004-07 duramax trucks. You can get a deal if you shop around. They are highly sought after because of their reliability and 20mpg average. I have read that towing they average 14-15mpg. Maybe some here on the boards can chime in on their mpg's with this truck.

20mpg? Probably not. I came close to that once. It was on a river trip in pouring rain and we never really got over 65 mph. Got like 19 that trip. Normal driving at around 70-75 mph I get around 16-18. Towing I usually get around 14-15 if I keep it under 65.

I bought mine new in 'O5... 2500 HD CC 4wd... Had a Cummins at the time,
other than the ride it was the worst financial decision I ever made...

Gas bills killed me, it was our family ride which was not a good choice either. We got rid of it last week, bought a used mazzda 6....I forgot
what it was like to go a whole week ( 400 miles or so) on 18 gallons...

We will get another truck, but it wont be a 6.O.... Great for towing if you can afford it, but in this economy it wasnt the wise choice.

4wd, 6.0 4.10 rear, Cold air box, had 20's on it. Only issue we had was the front bearings wearing out at 60K and a transfer case issue that got fixed. Ran great tho.

Do your homework on the used truck. My sister bought an '07 duramax CPO with 36K miles. She has had nothing be problems (primarily contaminated oil and they can't/won't find the source of the problem) and is currenlty working with a lemon law attorney. It also turns out that the truck was in an accident that was not disclosed due to HIPPA regulations. Her mlieage has never been better than 15 mpg.

Around town my Duramax gets between 12-13 mpg. Im not afraid to use the go pedal though if you know what I mean. :D

Steve, my 7.3 Excursion got over 15 in the city. If I drove it easy on the highway, 18/19. Had a 3/4 ton Burb with the Vortech 454 and 410 gears. That truck got about 6 towing, less than 10 empty. A buddy of mine had the same Burb with the old Deisel in it. The same motor GM put in the military Hummers. That fucker was gutless, but it got great mileage, I think he would brag about getting 20mpg.

IMO the money saved can buy alot of gas esp if you just use the truck for towing boat.My brother had an 04 dmax it seemed like every trip to glamis he would have a problem with the injector harness.Along with that it overheated easily. He sold it and got an 08 its bone stock but towing his 40 ft toyhauler it sucks the fuel down prob about 8-9 mpg.He says its bad his 04 did better here but even empty it was not 20mpg i drove us home from parker once and doing about 80 it barely did better than my 6,0 would do fuel wise.

I dont really drive my truck around town i mainly use it for glamis, river or camping.Maybe 10k a year now

The only way to calculate mile per gallon usage is to fill the tank until the nozzle stops. Drive 200 miles, refill the tank til the nozzle stops. That's the no BS milage one gets. My Navigator gets 45 mpg going downhill with a tail wind, according to the onboard flowscan ;):D

Wifes 05 Escalade ESV (AWD) gets 14/15 in Havasu and 18/20 on the hiway. Towing 6800# on the hiway is 13/15 but IMHO it all depends on how hard you hit on it. Watching the 'instant milage' shown on the dash is just like a vacuum gauge to me and it keeps me from 'blasting off' from every stop light. Keeping the RPMs down and anticipating the next hill on the hiway really helps too. (rather than just letting the cruise 'hammer the throttle' at the base of every hill)

I hand calculated my last trip with 6.0 and it was 13.3 average 75mph. I was loaded down pretty good. I was stoked going up Chiriaco summit at 70+. My 07 f450 with 6.0 diesel 12mpg same trip a little heavier load could not maintain 70 mph. dropped to 55mph or I would blow turbo hose.

I know alot of v10 Excursion owners and not one has ever got over 11mpg. I recall 5-6mpg at most towing my 22' boat when I would pay fuel for friends truck while I towed TH. Steve your getting old and driving to slow. Remember stick to the left lane:D

what i was getting at here was if you say v10 it's the kiss of death..

but then find out none are much better...

no way a 6.0 out pulls a v 10 or they would put them in the 1 ton vans...

Yes all the gassers suck it down especially when towing. The 6.0 pulls better than expected but nothing like my Duramax. Does not move until 3000rpms plus and likes to rev out before gear changes. On the fence on buying a new crewcab 5.3 6 speed Chevy half ton. Better mpgs than diesel and not the maintenance costs. Damn f350 just bought 2 new batteries and fuel filters $200 and its leaking coolant again off front of motor.

Like i said i have the 6.0 yes great motor but IMO it dont come near the torque of the v 10.I know one guy who has a v10 has 200k on it still going strong

We have 8 05'/06 GMC2500HD w/496/allisons and 12 08' 3500's w/6.0's in our squad. All extra cabs, all Pacific work bodies, all weigh in around 10k lbs. loaded with gear.

That said, the 496's and 6.0's are both averaging around 8mpg. All city, commuting, code 3 driving so they are all pushed pretty hard. That said, no engine issues from any of them, 174k the highest on the oldest 05, 95k the most on one of the 08's.

Only issues have been the tranny's on the 08 as they aren't Allisons. I recall 2nd gear issues were the problem on 3 of the 08's.

That said, the increased torque of the 496 is apparent when we roll entrail, we usually have to wait up for the 6.0's to catch up on any hills.

We are getting 8 new 12' GMC's with the 6.0. I'd of rather had the Ford (heard the 6.2 block replaced the V10), over the 6.0, but they work.

Diesel is going to win the mpg debate, and an older one will count out the cost of a head to head new gas vs. diesel difference.

In laws had an 03 E350 Quigley equipped 4X4 with 6.0 on 32's. It averaged 16mpg. solo on Parker trips. It was lemon lawed over electrical issues related to the conversion co. that did the interior (van would not start after running 200 miles straight on trips.

For a multi passenger vehicle other than a pickup, a 6.0 diesel E250/350 would fit the tow/mpg bill, just hard to fine decent mileage used ones.

Just my experience

Steve, I'm not sure if this helps. My work truck normally rolls down the road at 11k loaded weight and averages 13 mpg on the highway and 9 around town, 5.7 litre. I check fuel mileage at every fill up and it does not seem to make a difference winter or summer driving. I have yet to tow with it.

I reset the gauge on my diesel at every fill up. That's the key to it being accurate. Ive tested it against the hard math and it's pretty dam close. Now on my '87 I've been logging miles at every fill up to keep track of mileage. Was hoping it would be getting better but it's not so I stopped. I'll start checking it again when it's got more miles on it and I learn to keep my foot out of it. It's just too fun nailing it from a stoplight and barking 2nd. LOL

Download a app called Gas Cubby. I've been using it since last May. Here are some of my screen shots.

It also keeps track of all of your service and maintenance. You set how long or how many miles between and it will remind you when a service is needed.

I have a 2005 2500hd 4x4 crew cab long bed with 4:10 gears. Totally stock and I get 11-12 in most all conditions... I find it helps qualify the driver by asking how often they change the brakes... I have got close to 100,000 miles out of my last two trucks on original oem brake sets.. Braking is what kills gas mileage not holding speed!

My in laws have a 2005 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0. It's a fully loaded crew cab short bed, 4.10s, automatic. Only aftermarket items are oversized tires (285/75/16s) and a camper shell. We took it on a 800 mile road trip, it averaged 12.5 with the cruise set on 75 (GPS'd everything, so oversized tires don't throw speedo off). Oh, and it was empty, other than a few suitcases.

For comparison sake, my F-250 4x4 with the 7.3 will get 16.5 MPGs with the cruise set at 75, and that's with 35" tires. With the 33s, it would get 18 on the highway.

Excellent point. I have 96k on my '02 and I still have a long way to go on my original brakes.
