I ended up pulling my motor after all and it was suggested that I change out the timing chain while I have it this "far apart". What suggestions does the gallery have for a replacement set ??? I have had problems finding a set for my Gen 5 motor. Can I use any mark IV set ?? So far the only thing I can tell that is different as far as timing is concerned is the number of bolts that hold the cover on ???? Please correct me if I am wrong and suggest a good quality timing gear and chain set for my Cruiser motor (ie stock or near stock Indmar horsepower, of 1996 vintage).

thanks in advance

I would go with a nice single roller timing set would be fine for your application . That are relatively inexpensive considering...

I'm sure comp cams , cloyes and others make a set for your engine. Have you tried summit or jegs ?

I'm not sure if you can run a gen 4 timing set...

The difference is the gen 5 has a camshaft retainer plate, that registers on the end of the camshaft. Also the timing gear bolt circle is smaller. I used a cloyes single roller on my build. The chain is bigger, almost like a 520 like dirt bike chain.

The suggestions are correct, it has to be a dedicated Gen5/6 timing set, and if you are retaining the stock cover, will need to stick with a single roller type chain. Depending on hours on the engine, you could even just put a new GM chain on and be good,, (I believe Summit sells them as well)

Thanks for the reply. The motor has a Glennwood Marine (10bolt??) timing cover. Is that the same size as the stock cover ???

The Glendwood cover should allow a double roller chain set, just make sure it's one for the Gen5/6 cam pattern. For whatever reason, they are higher priced than the MK IV style.

Summit sells a very nice double roller gear KIT complete with Torington thrust bearing. I've installed dozens of these P/N #G6610B. Good stuff
