Frustrating .... Well the wifes vegetable garden is off and growing but , the Gophers are already at it however despite the veggies roots are buried in mesh , One critter is super smart keeps tripping the traditional traps any "tried and true methods from the "brain trust"

Stick a peeled carrot in the ground outside his hole, a pellet gun should take care of it real quick.

I used to get paid a dollar for each one I got in my grandparents garden lol. :)

This peckerhead has tripped that style trap 3 times ;)

You need to open the hole and find the Tee in the tunnel and place one in each direction. And yes leave it open , when they come to investigate, bnag! Shove them in a ways, and lightly cover to keep anything else out.

I use gopher gassers and a shop vac on blower mode. Shove 3-4 down the hole and blow away. You'll see where they're coming from in a heartbeat.

My old house always had gophers. I used these traps to probably kill 25 of them over a few years. I never left the hole open though. I would always cover the hole with cardboard so no light came in. The gophers would come through and hit the trap within a day or so every time.

We used to get gophers in the yard when I was a kid. We had a beagle that would dig them up and kill them. He was a digging fool and went after them with a vengeance. We had good loose dark sandy soil and he'd often dig so deep all you'd see was the tip of his tail and flying dirt.....I got the bad end of the deal as I had to fill the holes after his execution digs had wiped out the gophers. That involved hauling in a couple and more wheelbarrows of dirt as the digging dog scattered the bulk of material beyond recovery. Then I had to reseed the area which took several weeks at best.

Moral of this is, even though they are very efficient, do not use canine gopher control as they use a scorched earth procedures leading to backbreaking human labor.:skull

One of my SiL's friends hunts varmints with a centerfire 17 Remington......Those bad boys travel around 4200 fps and leave bits and pieces on small rodents.:yikes

Buzzard Sushi right .... used to shoot them (ground squirrels) with .06 with sabotted 55 grain "surface to critter missiles"

Ahh. I love my 25/06 , such a fun little gun!

My favorite is my 220 swift for squirrels/Marmots though, damn thing shoots so far and straight.

We have 2 Black Mouth Cur Dogs that keep EVERYTHING out of our yard and they get them above ground without digging. Even Hummingbirds!:eek
They are serious hunters.:D
Another option in to buy a Gas powered Gopher Getter for 400.00 or make one yourself. They work amazingly good and are very easy to use. No mess, No Fuss and they are already buried when done.:eek:eek

We have a friend that used to winter with us down at Mayflower, outside Blythe. He had a Doberman that would go after them damn things like nobody's bizz. Sometimes all one could see was the dogs ass and tail in the hole. We always kidded he should rent the dog out for backhoe service.

I kills shit loads of these pocket gophers every year --- mostly because my friggin neighbors are too lazy and they're breeding the bastards :grumble:

I've never had any luck with gopher gassers, or tail pipe gas, because they can plug the tunnel in seconds. Now if you could pump straight carbon monoxide in, with no odor, that might work. Also in my case due to my property sloping, I can't flood them.
A guy did recently mention the gopher gassers in combo with the shop vac, that would tend to fill the tunnels much more quickly, could work ??

Anyway, I've had excellent success with the Victor "Black Boxes" over 90% kill rate. But, it's all about the preparation and finding the Tee for the main tunnels going in each direction --- roughly 8-10" behind the mound. Then setting a trap facing each direction. I also have had much better success covering and essentially sealing the hole over the two traps.

Occasionally they'll bury them, if that's the case I might move locations and try again, 2nd try I'll switch to the Macabee style you've been using.
With those be sure to tie a hefty string to them and stake the string. Otherwise, if you snag the gopher by the tail (Done that several times) or the trap gets him by the ass, he can pull the trap into the tunnel. Again, two traps and cover and seal the hole.

I also bait all my traps with a dab of peanut butter, I have no idea if it helps, but I've just tried to stay with what has worked for me.
