Posting for a friend. His lower between the pick up and skeg is starting to erode. I've never seen anything like it so I thought I'd post on here to see what your thoughts are. He's had it repaired once, and it's happening again.

Boat: DCB F26
Motor: Teague 800
Drive: Imco SCX? It's an Imco, just not sure which one.

There was a thread about this on OSO awhile back.. Apparently it's a very common problem and considered "normal?" I've never seen it before either?

He was told its caused by aerated water hitting the drive. It seems like if that were the case then many/all drives on a single cat would have the same issue.

Mine has the exact same thing. AJ at BCM referred to it as a sort of "cavitation burn" from the water. Mine is a Teague 800 with Platinum XR Drive with polished lower.

DCB with a Teague 800.
Was your first recommendation to put a pair of whackers on it? :)

Crazy almost like cavitation burn marks on an aluminum prop.

My guess is cavitation erosion from the water skimming off the edge of the water pickup for the drive. Hitting it just right from the trim angle and drive height, water is pretty gnarly at those speeds and pressures. I don't think there is any real easy solution, from initial look to me it's a hydrodynamic/physics issue, not a material issue. Breaking/rounding the sharp edge of the water pickup may help smooth the water flow and reduce the problem, but you'll want to be careful and make sure that it doesn't starve the water pickup to cool the motor.

The truth is out.

DCB = Dave's Corroding Boats.

There's some irony in that statement. He's actually considering whackers; not for this boat, but his next. He's across the street from Inman's new Nordic with twin whackers, and he keeps asking about mine.

Mandelon - the boat isn't corroding, just the drive. Imco must mean IMmense COrrosion and the SXC drive must be the Super X-treme Corrosion edition. :D
