We’re about to find out! Swapping my 300x for a 300r V8 4 stroke this weekend. Currently my 2005 Schiada 21RT has a 300x with a DBR kit and a Torquemaster lower w/1.75 gears on it. Switching it to a 300r with a Sportmaster lower. Some say the Torquemaster lower works better on my application because it wont see speeds above 85. Anything above 85 normally will run a Sportsmaster lower. Since it’s never been done and it’s a brand new motor, Fallon Marine in Havasu has offered to swap motors on the boat and do some testing. Stay tuned....

There’s alot of plus sides to it for me. Cheaper gas (87 octane) vs 91/100 in the X. Better fuel economy, doesn’t require a separate oil tank for oil injection, and doesn’t smoke like a broke stove! Lol. Hopefully the sportmaster lower works and I won’t have to swap it out for the Torquemaster.

Aren’t there some lakes that have banned 2 strokes (Powell)?

I would be very interested to find out how the R performs compared to the X. I may one day want to do the same kind of swap on my Cougar.

I should have some numbers after the weekend to post. Like I said though, I’m not comparing apples to apples as far as the lower units go. It might hurt me or it could help me. We’ll find out.

Marc, what is the difference in weight of the motors?

The X weighs 505lbs and the R weighs 512. I’m removing the trim pump and the oil tank from inside the boat though, so the 300R will end up being less weight overall.

I am anxious to finally hear performance comparisons with Mercury's new motors on a Schiada...

That’s dry vs dry correct? Have you figured the weight with oil vs the trim pump and injection tank ?

Yes that’s dry weight. I haven’t weighed those items yet. I will once they’re outta the boat.

Actual weight of mercury 300r
I put another new Mercury 300R on the new 21 Liberator that I'm currently putting together. I decided to weigh it with my digital scale as it was hanging from the forklift. Yes, I did deduct the weight of the chain! The motor weight INCLUDES the 7 quarts of oil in the crankcase. Motor came in at 528 lbs and cowl was another 33 lbs.
TOTAL WEIGHT WITH FLUIDS IS 561 LBS. A little heavier than expected, but still worth the extra weight to me! I just figure its 8 gallons of gas heavier than the 300xs, but then again, the full oil tank on a 300xs is 25-30 lbs.

The above is from " Wildman" aka Randy Corsen

I personally love the smell of 2 stroke exhaust. I remember the days in the channel and the haze layer at night. Not good for the environment but brings back good memories!

Yes. CDR out of Kentucky is making them as we speak. Suppose to be 20lbs lighter than stock and have better airflow. [emoji1303]

Primer grey doesnt help it lol but updated progress 4 stroke

But even better then the looks is the 20+ lbs we are able to take off this cowl, the more air we can add, the ability to remove cowl from the ground with exterior latches, we should of helped fuel efficency with more air and less weight, should see hole shot improvement and we were able to shorten it to fit garage better. I've tried to address all issues but performance is key.

Not sure if it was said, but with the sportmaster you can run the motor higher . Maybe prop shaft flush or little higher than bottom of boat and chopper prop. Less drag and more speed? Yeah? You can also still run your bravo prop maybe a taller pitch too?

My bravo prop that was on my X is just a 22p. Thinking I’m gonna end up with somewhere in the neighborhood of a 26-28p with the new motor.

I have a pair of vented 28 Bravos in Havasu. I'll be down next weekend if you want to try it.

We ran a total of 5 props today. Here are the results.....just like I thought, it’s gonna be in the neighborhood of a 28. This is all we had as far as props for today. Meeting with Mercury later in the week and hopefully have some of the new 5 blades to try out. 74.5mph @ 6300rpm was the best we got today.

-22 bravo 65mph @ 6450rpm

-26 chopper 62mph @ 6300rpm

-28 bravo 2 hole 73mph @ 6100rpm (Nordic prop)

-28 bravo no holes 15 1/4 74.5mph @ 6300rpm

-26 trophy 65mph @ 5700rpm

Thanks for the update..

Did Fallon assist with a prop size/style.....Or are you testing on your own?

Did you mess with engine heights at all? Surprised at the chopper vs the bravo 28s. Shows you the torque numbers on the motor

They’re assisting in every way possible. It was their idea to put the motor on the boat and if I didn’t like the results, they would’ve put my old motor back on the boat free of charge. They’re also getting more props to try and are talking with Mercury about options to try as well as putting a Torquemaster lower on it like the 300X had.

We just used the jack plate during testing to lower and raise the motor. We probably won’t get to test until after the boat show next weekend.

#1 question

How did it feel to pull up to the 87 octane pump?

#2 question

How did it feel to not have to dump oil in the tank?

I couldn’t get myself to put 87 in, so i put 91. Lol

It’s really nice to not have to buy the oil and put it in the tank. It was always in my head that the oil injection would fail at some point. Nice to not worry about it now.

When my oil inj. fails... and you figure out the right prop and height... I'll just copy yours. ;)
