I’m sure our grandparents said the same thing about Hank Williams Jr as we are saying about Beyoncé. The younger crowd will probably be blasting that shit from their Surf boats in the channel all summer.
Comparing beyonce to Hank jr....?
C'mon...Hank Jr. had his father's DNA&Lineage. His worst song is better than any of her crap.
beyonce had money &power...that's it.
People have been playing shitty music in the channel for decades so the fact you'll be able to hear her crap in the channel is more indicative of sheep trying to be tragically hip.
Go listen to Alan Jackson's gone country.
He pretty much nails the whole not country but seeing dollar signs phenomenon.

I'm the outcast in here I can see, I like some old, some new and some in between.

My favorite country song and in my top 5 of all time in any genre.....Hank SR....When the wind is right you'll hear his song, smell whiskey in the air.

I was comparing the reaction of a generation verses the reaction of this generation. If we were to compare them, what metric would you use to say one is better than the other, besides personal taste?

The song that this thread is talking about is number 1 on the charts right now. I’m guessing someone likes it.

I get the comparison of then vs.now.
Problem is your comparison is flawed due to revisionist history.
Hank jr.was born country royally. He came along when outlaw country was hitting it's stride...David Allen Coe Waylon JenningsJessie Colter,The Outlaws, Flying Burrito bros....even up to the highwaymen..There was no pushback.
Used ro eat, breathe, sleep real country so I guess I use that as my metric..And yes it's subjective as is your basic premise.
As far as being #1 on the charts...
Our country is full of stooped people who are in fact sheep.Jeez,Joe Biden got 81 million votes!?
Did you listen to the Allen Jackson song I referenced?

I’ve heard every Allen Jackson song, I wouldn’t need to go listen to one. 🤷🏼‍♂️

My wife and daughter love the Beyoncé song, they sing and dance around the house listening to it and making up dances to it. I guess they’re stupid. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Beyoncé is her favorite singer as well. I was just wondering when I tell her the song sucks and there’s no comparison to Hank, what I would use to back that up.

It was an innocuous honest question...just asking...
Your wife&daughter love beyonce...that's awesome.
IMO...the song sucks.Period.Nothing beyond that. That's actually what this thread is about. I responded with my subjective take.Last I checked that was somewhat o.k.

Sure. The radio stations that were paid to play it over and over and over again.

As long as its a catchy tune and it tells a story, I'll listen to it. I like classics from Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys and Willie Nelson because that's what was playing on the radio growing up. I also like new releases from younger artists like Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Blake Shelton, Billy Currington and Dustin Lynch.

I'm not picky, but I refuse to listen to this monstrosity cobbled together by this pop artist 'Beeyoncea' or WTF her name is.

Nobody's debating the origin I've never thought it came from the 70's. Just like Led Zeppelin didn't create it but it's definitely rock & roll and in a class all it's own.

Led Zeps roots are the blues, man. 😎

Funny what everyone’s opinion of what real country is. Country music originated from black folk music from
slaves and share croppers. Yes everyone wants to embrace this ideology that real country is from guys like Hank, Merle, Willie and DAC. When in reality it’s just one era of country as it’s progressed and changed over the years.

My cousin is a music historian and worked for the Library of Congress and a member of the Grand Old Opry. It’s always interesting at holidays to listen him talk and play music. Our ideas and concept of where country music came from are way off from reality. 🤷🏼‍♂️

That's so freaking cool. 👍🏼👍🏼

Red Dirt country is the shit! I have made a Pandora station for it. It is pretty well tuned up.

There is a radio station in San Luis Obispo called KJUG that is a pretty small local station (you can get it from Santa Maria up to Nacimiento). The program director really loves the smaller artists so there is frequently people like Cody Jinx, Turnpike Troubadours, etc on the radio and their shows are promoted regularly. The quality of country music shows on the Central Coast will rival most areas IMHO. Great venues in really cool places, with some REALLY good artists throughout the year and with regular frequency.

Saw Casey Donahew several years ago at Tooth and Nail Winery in Paso. Probably wasnt more than about 150 or so people there on the front porch of the Castle. I will NEVER forget that show. The wife and I were early enough we were on the rail for the entire thing.

I always thought the line "One mans half way up is another mans half way down" was a good metaphor for people in general.
Like the Rain is another one of his songs I like.

This is the ultimate bullshit country call out song;

Shooter Jennings

Outlaw you

I get home from a long day, put on the radio
Lookin' for some country soul, but I don't find it, no
It's a dirt road free for all, some old boys sayin' they're outlaws,
They dress the part and they talk the talk
You know they've been taught to walk the walk
These boys think they're tough like they been robbin' banks
Cause they name drop Johnny Cash and they name drop poor old Hank

Hey pretty boy in the baseball hat
You couldn't hit country with a baseball bat
Country ain't just about where you're at
It's about bein' true to what's inside
You say you're an outlaw with your perfect boots
That you got from your record label's image group
Sing another man's song with a big drum loop
Listen, son, you ain't got a clue
You can't buy true, tell you what they should do
They should outlaw you

Let me paint a picture for you, Nashville in '62
The formula had proven true, they didn't let nothing new through
When Waylon came to town, they didn't like his original sound
They tried hard to keep him down, they tried hard to starve him out
But he kept playin' shows and pressin' on, chippin' away, song by song
After years and years of strugglin' strong, he got his chance and he took it to #1
With "This Time" back in '74, with his band in the back and 4 on the floor
That one record busted down the door and the record labels had the control no more
Then in '76 came the Outlaws record, sold the first million in country music ever
Those old boys with long hair and braids stayed true to their sound and freed the slaves
And all these years later, the suits got back their grip
They took the outlaw concept and they re-packaged it
And there's a million Ol Waylon fans
Singin' "Don't y'all think this outlaw bit has gotten way out of hand"

Hey pretty boy in your cowboy hat
You couldn't hit country with a baseball bat
Country ain't just about where you're at
It's about bein' true to what's inside
You say you're an outlaw with your perfect boots

All you Tyler Childers lovers should watch his ”In your love video”…….
🤮
Completely agree on your take about Tyler’s new stuff lol. I was waiting for someone to bring that song up.

I prefer coked out Tyler.

Onto Beyoncé, good on her for doing something different, but it doesn’t fit my ear.

First off, I will say I respect her talent immensely but country ain't Beyoncé.
I'm not even a country music fan but good grief, that shit sounds like a hip-hop production with plenty of "Woooo's", "Chooo's" & a pretend country draw on 3 or 4 words.
Is it a wonder country musicians ain't handing out a warm and fuzzy welcome to her?
What's all y'alls take on this?🤪😂
Wait to she wins country artist best song they are gonna loose their shit 😂

Just because....

Lol, when my wife first saw this a few years back, she said "now that's a real cowboy...no skinny jeans, jewelry, or faggot tattoos" LOL LOL

And any good country fan would recognize Janie Fricke singing backup.

Happy Friday!

She will. Gotta remember the same people who own the music industry own all the media. She's there because someone wants her there.

How many writers does the average country artist use? She has over 100 writers on her payroll. Just sing the words and shake your fake ass and you win an award.

When I was a kid I remember watching an awards show while at a friends house when Olivia Newton John won an award for country album or song and they were losing their shit because "she's not country". They were right, but at the time being a kid I didn't know the difference.

You guys are a funny bunch...

Ya know why I like the new country music? Bands like Old Dominion and shit?

They remind me of The Eagles, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, and all those other bands back in the day.

I'm sure some of you so called County Righteous peeps never listened to those bands either???

Whatever! 😜

Fuck that depressing ol country twang ! 🤣

Where's the party!?!?!

Music progresses and changes. I prefer real music and not the manufactured crap they shove down our throats in all genres. Always respect the elders and originators, but I appreciate new artists trying to make they way. It's not easy to stay true to yourself as the record labels will try and make you into what they want. Makes it a lot harder for the new kids.

Darius Rucker stayed consistent with country music for many years to become accepted and he is a genuine dude who can sing well.

I don't see Beyoncé making it in this genre.
I was listening to him without knowing it when he first got into country, one day I realized he was the Hootie guy. 👍

It's all manufactured, isn't it?

Some tribes use two sticks and an animal hide to make music.

Some use electronic synthesizers.

Remember when the Moog Synth came out? Every band HAD to have one!

Like what moves you. 👍🏼

I meant it as the record company snatches up someone and hands them a script, I mean song. Here's your hit. Beyonce doesn't write her music. It's handed to her. Happens to a lot of folks.

Beyoncé being country is kind of like all the Stagecoach posers that surface when that shit show comes around. All dressed up in cowboy hats and boots that have been in the closet since last year before returning to their barista, vape shop cashier, and telemarketer jobs the following Monday.

When was the last time Beyoncé rode a horse or stepped in cow shit on an actual farm? What a joke.

Absolutely.

Very few artists write their own lyrics/music.

Protip: Old Dominion is one that does both. 👍🏼

You can usually tell authenticity. They aren't in the top 40, but sound better than those that are.

I'm gonna give them a listen as I don't know I've ever heard of them? Even now I still get demo's sent to me and I haven' been in music for 12+ years now. Country has never been my forte in promotion although I've done Willie, Bonnie Raitt and a few others. Holy shit that was a long time ago,,, Damn I'm old,,,,

My favorite band right now. They just sold out The Staples Center, and the seats were a freaking fortune! 😱

This is one of my favorites by them, and it Never gets Any air time!!!

My Dad was always saying when I was a kid on the farm about people like that "The shits in the boots not on em" :p
