Stacy asked me what I wanted for Christmas… well on my social media feeds I keep getting these ads for all these various indoor gardens.. Even though it seems pretty contrary to something that one would think I’d want, I found myself staring at these things and watching videos, reading reviews etc..

Anyhow after a month of that I told her I wanted this indoor garden called “Mygarden”.

This is an indoor deal that has a virtual assistant with artificial intelligence to basically help you grow plants. It has two cameras on it that watch the plants and vary light and watering as needed. I am sure some of that is hype, but I will come back to that.

I put this together yesterday afternoon and I gotta say I am REALLY IMPRESSED!

I don’t know who designed this thing but they hit it out of the park.. The packaging was first rate, and they even make use of it while you’re assembling it. For example the box it comes in is the right height to help with assembly etc.. it all goes together extremely easy and it’s well built.. Without droning on and on this thing gets a 9/10 in my book for design / instructions / packaging / quality.. the instructions even have QR codes on each page so you can watch videos of how to put it together.. (it’s so incredibly easy though I only watched one out of curiosity).

I am really excited to watch the seeds germinate and the kids get to watch and learn about plants starting from nothing and grow into food.. it’s a pretty far stretch from @wash11 program but supposedly this thing will kick out enough greens you can eat salads and more daily in a small space.

The app you download watches the plants and has a ton of cool features like a “Timelapse” of your plants growing.. reminds you to pollinate any flowery type plants, prune, trim roots etc..

Anyhow I know most won’t care but this is the thread dedicated to my garden aka mygardyn.

By the way if any of you are gonna go out and get one let me know because I get 2 free months on my membership if I refer ya.. lol.

Not sure if the coupon code still works but they had it for 499.00 with the code NEW YEAR..

That would he my only complaint about the program is during their ad campaigns I’d routinely see different coupon codes for different prices ranging from 799-499.

www.mygardyn.com.

Anyhow this is day 1. I will update this as things grow.. I’m expecting 10 weeks until it’s fully grown.

Each plant has its own color combo so the AI knows which is which.. that said they are watered in columns and each cup is filled with water so I’m not entirely sure how it could vary something plant to plant, which is why is suspect some of it is “hype”.

None the less I am really impressed with all of it so far.

Soil and water.. just sayin!

Those are gonna be a bitch to clean when they go root bound!

Cool concept though I guess🤷🏻‍♂️

What are you growing in them? Carrots? Radishes? Tomatoes? Lettuce?

Various lettuces / spices / cherry tomatoes / sweet peppers. It came with a bunch of things I wouldn’t eat like bokchoy, but as we get going we will rotate in the plants we like.

By the way we have killed every plant we have ever had.. so I’m really looking forward to this thing doing all the work.

The way the cartridge pulls out I don’t think it will be hard to clean.

We've been gardening for about 13 years now with varying degrees of success. I can tell you without a doubt that had this been available when we started, we would have jumped on it. I geek out hard on this stuff. Keep the thread updated!

Herbs and spices smell so awesome when they grow.
Basil, cilantro, etc.

Always a nice reward is how much better stuff tastes and smells when grown to ripe rather than most store bought.

Might be a good idea to do a PH test on your water, too😉

Along my morning beach walk I found a wild tomato plant that surely is the result of someone tossing out their tomato. 4 or 5 good looking 'maters on that vine just about ready to be plucked.
Outside of our two peach and one apple trees we've not had good luck with growing food/vegetables at home. Have not tried any kind of indoor setup.

This was our first year "gardening". It wasn't a failure, but no bumper crop either. Something like this that helps with the variables is awesome. In early spring, I'll be adding compost to our planters, and mix it in good before planting.

Like Dave, I'd never successfully grown anything. This year I learned to can stuff I grew. Baby steps. Hopefully next year will be more success. Have a ton of tomatoes and peppers though!

Shit.. what am I looking for and how do I test it and control that? This thing said just use tap water (no soft water or filtered water)

I bought a aero garden set up just before covid to show our kids. They thought it was cool but attention span is short. LOL! They got the point and moved on. I want to set it up again. Loved having fresh basil. Wife hates it on the counter top.

Hit one of the garden centers, or the water filter section at Home Depot. They look just like pool test kits. Being on a well out here, I check it once or twice a year, more for our health than plants.

If you don't want softened or filtered water you'll have to take water from an outdoor hose spigot.

Looks like members have answered here already.

Some plants are more sensitive to it than others.

A question I have is what is the media the plants grow in?
Rockwool or coconut shell shavings, or?

Did the directions say anything about feeding the plants?
Or suggest a brand or NPK ratio of any kind?

Hydro systems like this can be epic producers, or epic failures.
Make a plan and you should be fine.

I love the idea of vertical farming. Pretty cool that its all self contained also.

Many of us have seen the Tiki party boats putting around the channel but what most probably won't know is that the owner of that started a non profit food generator for people in need. https://sanclementeurbanfarms.com

Urban farms started in Greg's back yard and is now based at the Bella Colina private golf course in San Clemente.

I've been looking at the ones he uses to start a small garden at my house. I'm looking forward to checking in this thread to see how yours grows @RiverDave.

Are the seeds pre packaged in some kind of growing soil? Is each plant pod is pre made ready to just clip it in and takes it from there?

Or do you get a bag of seeds and you plant them in the machine?

And when you harvest do you take out that plastic part and drop in another DLU (disposable loading unit) with seed and soil material?

Years ago, we were demo'ing out some old machinery, including a blower system Hi Volume, Lo pressure. 4"& 6" sch40 (white) PVC PIPE. A buddy, cut it into 12' lenths. buried 4' in the ground. 2" hole saw. all 4 side staggered bout 18" apart all the way up. then took a torch, heated the pipe below the hole, pipe wrench, bent it out like a.tongue.
Burnt the pipe black of course.
Sunny spot in the yard. Filled with dirt.
Spent $10 bucks on a few packs of colorful seed. Spinkled them in all the holes. Planted growing vines.at.the base.
By mid summer they were gorgeous.
Had 4 or 5 of them around. Vines completely covered the pipe. multiple random colors from each port....
Nice !

Subscribed. I’m guessing it has lights facing the plants to make them grow.

I know he uses it outside so I'm guessing its not a specialized as Daves - but it grows a shit ton of food for the local's it supports.
I don’t want to crap in Dave’s thread, all these systems suit different people.
We have a Green Stalk (a soil based vertical) out back among other pots and beds.
I prefer soil.
I can see the high points of an aero or hydro system and wouldn’t knock anyone trying with one.

Lots of advantages if the system is dialed in. Less pests. Less disease/mold/etc
Quicker to react to feed/nutrients.
Lots of advantages to growing indoors under closer watch.

You’re going to eat this.
Grow it bad ass👍

I'm in the Produce industry, some pretty innovative techniques similar to this (on steroids) that's been out for a while. We had a presentation a few years back and its pretty interesting that produce is human contact , pesticide and fertilizer free. There is a facility in Compton that is HUGE and this type of technology will really be a big thing in China/Japan. Carbon footprint is pretty big though with the electricity that is used, but they are able to increase/speed up growth with the turn of a dial, Literally.

Won't be long before Dave is making Lacinato Kale smoothies, commencing with the garden Shaman and talking to his spirit guide in the form of a bird.😁
So he is growing some good weed??

Just read up on the MyGardyn. The tech seams cool and looking forward to some real world experience with it.

When assembling, did you have multiple water pumps or valves controlling water flow to each tower or sections of a tower?

Shit.. what am I looking for and how do I test it and control that? This thing said just use tap water (no soft water or filtered water)

Test strips work great. You can also find fairly inexpensive digital meters on Amazon.

Assuming you do need to treat the water, I’ve been pretty happy with Bloom City products.

It will be great for your kids to see, smell, help and eat what you are going to grow.

We do different lettuces, basil, mint, cilantro, chives, snap peas, tomatoes, etc. My wife grows in regular raised planter beds though.

We do a couple of raised beds and pots outside.
Bibb lettuce and peas are doing good this year and we got a few red lettuce volunteers.

The great advantage of the system Dave is using is précise controll over the light/temps.
That freak few days before Christmas of 78-80 degrees sent my Romain lettuce straight to bolt.

Which is great I guess if you want to make seed. Not so great if you wanted to eat it, lol.

I have a two or three bottles of Fox Farm liquid nutrients if anyone needs them, I tried the hydroponics thing a couple years ago and realized it wasn't for me.
