All of my tools went out the to the river house when I was building this house. Now that this house is done I would like to buy a nice tool box with foam prison style inserts that hold the tools. If we’re missing a tool the instert is empty and we know it search time. I would like to have have it come stocked and ready to go box / tools / inserts. A great all around tool set to work on cars and rzrs toys.

I was looking at Boxo sets any feedback on these? Also anyone else sell the box with a good assortment of tools ready to go?

Generally the good ones that I have seen you kind of have to build.

I’m sure there is upper end sets available like you want but it’s gonna be a few $$$

If it’s just hobby stuff I’d build my own.

Damn they better be bad ass for $2250

It literally has everything, from safety wire pliers to flush cuts, extendable ratchets and much more all in custom cut laser foam inserts. It must be seen in person. Baja proven!!

Check out Gearwrench. They’ll custom cut foam to fit their tools in whatever layout you’d like. Don’t have the link handy, but google it.

Their stuff isn’t Snap-On quality, but it’s very good.

My neighbor is the face behind the Boxo stuff. He says that the owner of Boxo machines parts for snap on, and the Boxo tools are made in that same machine shop.

I have been really impressed with my gearwrench ratchets. May not be the best of the best, but certainly good enough for a weekend warrior like me

Adam Quintard, KATG is a BOXO dealer. Great tools have same warranty as Snap-On, with exception you go to them vs them to you.

Our toolbox at work in the R&D shop gets picked over pretty good...was all full of Snap-On at one point, but every socket rail was missing at least 3 or 4 sockets, no ratchet to be found...about 1/2 the shit was gone. I bought all new GearWrench sets to replace it for a fraction of what it would have cost to replace the missing pieces. Their 120T ratchet is pretty badass. I don't see any of it failing, good quality stuff.

agreed, I have a 3/8 120T and then a full set of 80T long handle ones from them. I actually tend to prefer the 80T, the head seems a lot smaller and easier to get into tight places and my untrained hand doesn't notice much of a difference between 80 and 120. Both feel much better than my old craftsman 36T

$2250 ain't shit for a well stocked tool box.

Amen to that...

I'm not a mechanic by trade, but a work on my own shit guy. I've got $20K in hand tools alone, another $5K in air tools. Mostly Snap-on wiith some SK and Matco, and Mac and a few Craftsman and Stanley as well

$2250 is practically nothing for a set of good hand tools

Any idea how many teeth the early gear wrenches were? I have 3 or 4 that are fubar. 10mm sticks. Won't ratchet at all unless you tap it on steel or concrete.
13mm, 7/16, and 1/2" too.

I've since bought snap on...

Finally learned.

If I was going to re-stock I’d probably try to get my hands on a GMTK2 tool kit. Always wanted one of those.

I have a mixture of snap on, armstrong, matco crapsmen , among others . Personally, I really like the Armstrong stuff although one of the ratchet wrenches broke once.

The problem with any of these deals is if you own any tools , .most will be useless doubles you store away somewhere. If you have nothing and want an all around giterdone set of tools then these types of setups are great. Just my 1cent opinion.
Yes I agree. But he said he took ALL his tool to river house and is looking for a loaded tool box.

Bump. Organizing my garage and I think I’m going to toss my mismatched shitty desert tools and buy a Boxo tool box for the river and off-roading.

Anyone buy one of there sets? Looking at this.

I think that would be fucking stupid. There's less than $300 sitting there...and you're willing to pay $800. Gimme $600 and I build you a better set.

$800 is way steep you can do better at HD or Lowes for way less than half of that!

That is why I asked. I haven’t shopped for tool sets in 10-15 years. The garage has everything I need.

The tool box in the trailer has been a mix matched shitty set I’ve had since I was 15.

I’d like to put together a new tool box, and no I don’t want to spend $800.00 I’d rather spend 2-300.00

Just buy extra 10 mm sockets .... I suggest ... like 25 extra.... and like 15 extra wrench’s.

Just saying, as a friend, you need to.

I will take mismatched old school tools over pretty much anything they sell today.
I have thin-walled sockets that I use an impact with that have stood up for over 50 years. Meanwhile even modern snap on have bitten the dust. I know about warranty but my time and knuckles are worth it.
I like the old school snap-on stuff as well. The tools that live stay.. That is why they are mismatched.

Nothing wrong with old mismatched stuff...it works fine...remember, they’re tools.

I prefer harbor freight sockets to gear wrench...you can’t see the damn etching on Gearwrench stuff. $10/set or so and they work and hold up well. For wrenches, I’d go with Gearwrench. I like Vessel screwdrivers...but they’re not cheap. Channelock pliers are good and reasonably priced.

Harbor freight has stepped up the quality of their hand tools and tool boxes with the "Icon" line of lifetime warranty tools. No foam liners, but priced right for the quality. I would buy sets of that stuff to set up a weekend garage in a heartbeat.

Snap on prices are crazy, they depend on credit to sell tools, no "weekend warrior" needs that stuff to change oil or install some accessories. Proto is the same quality, some industrial supply houses sell it, not cheap either. Like most things in life you get what you pay for, in this case you just don't "need" the best of the best to tinker in your garage.

I'm still wrenching for a living, most of my tools are over 30 years old. When I need a new tool I look at how much it will be used and many times Harbor Freight is just fine.

I love the look on one of the Jr. tech's faces when he asks to borrow a 24mm wrench to do an alignment and I hand him a Harbor Freight wrench. It works just fine for that application.

When I was rebuilding my Mercury outboard I needed a 1/4 drive 5/16 12 point deep socket for the connecting rods, that job description meant Snap-On. High torque and tight tolerance work... I also like Snap-On for any valve adjusting tools, the precision and strength can't be beat. So look at the mission and fill your box accordingly.

Shop the Labor Day sales at Home Depot or Lowe’s in a month. Buy a set that best covers your bases, and fill in the blanks.

It's a given some members have big tool sets. A lot of us work on our own vehicles and boats or are professionals.

But I have to ask...how many of you have 19/32 and 21/32 sockets? 😁

Among other uses, the 19/32 is used on 1950s and 1960s Ford brakes, and the 21/32 on Ford FE connecting rod bolts. I was looking at mine just yesterday. They're in a drawer with tools I got from my grandfather when he died in 1968. I was eleven.

I have 19/32 and 21/32 in Box end wrenches as well. Pops owned many old fords. I have all of his tools from the fifties/60's and My Grandfathers tools dating back to the 30's

I’m wondering why most socket sets only get packaged in a 11 socket package but the socket holder has 14 pegs....

most wrench kits come in 10 wrench kits, why not follow the 11 sockets...

21/32 on Ford FE connecting rod bolts. I was looking at mine just yesterday.

My FE rod bolts take a 7/16 socket. ;)

I won’t even go down down the 6pt vrs 12pt socket road and then storing them on their own peg....

I like the Hansen style peg holders

I've got a couple tools from them, good stuff and great warranty, when I broke my 3/8 24" ratchet with the 1/2" adaptor on it, they said send us some pictures with your address and they shipped all the parts needed to rebuild the head no questions asked

I work with Boxo pretty closely. The shop is pretty decked out with Boxo tools and their OSM line of cabinets with more showing up weekly. If anyone is seriously interested in the fit, finish and quality, DM me and swing by the Havasu shop and take a look for yourself.

I bought the Harbor Freight Pittsburg set https://www.harborfreight.com/mechanics-tool-set-301-pc-63464.html . With a coupon you can get it for 150 bucks. I use it in my garage, and then the handy case allows me to throw it in the truck when we go off roading or camping. In the 5 years I have had it, I have never had one issue with anything breaking. i'm thinking of getting another so I don't have to move the one set around.
