Came across what I believe to be a pretty good deal on a 2017 XP4 1000. Titanium Grey / Red - $20,000 OTD. Can't see myself spending another $5k to go turbo, when my kids are little and we're gonna mainly cruise the desert. We will do sand a few times a year and go play at pismo and glamis.

Will it have enough power to keep me happy? I grew up duning VW rails with 1835s / 1914's, I'm sure they didn't make much more than 100hp and had zip for suspension.

Is the price good? Am I gonna regret not going turbo?

There is also some good deals happening on the Can Am Maverick Max turbo 4 seaters....but you never see anyone with one and I don't want to get the oddball setup lol

Resale seems strong on the rzr's, my thought was if I wanted to upgrade in a few years I should be able to sell it without taking a major bath.

What say ye?

3 of my friends bought them in Parker and went with the non turbo. For 20K you will love it, does anything you want it to do. I would only consider the turbo if you go to glamis..

For cruising desert it will be fine at glamis it may feel underpowered with a full car and big dunes.A friend in our group has one and he does fine but it aint a speed demon in the dunes and he had belt issues constantly even when new.But it will get you around the dunes.

I have a 2275 mid travel vw and will outrun him easily in the big dunes but on flat ground bigger whoops he will do better as i am not geared for long distance flat driving. They are pretty heavy stock then add all the accesories and on sand which doesnt roll as easy compared to dirt.

I saw a can am max last week when i pulled into salton city arco and it was very long and sat kinda low to ground i know they have lots of travel so it will have a good amount of down travel as well but i can see new drivers high centering when they really hit the dunes next season.

I would imagine there are some great deals with the season winding down now.

For the desert you aren't going to need the Turbo.. The normal ones are plenty fast enough.. Honestly in the dirt (according to my buddy that has owned both) you can't really tell that much of a difference between the turbo and normal, but he said in the sand it would be more noticeable.

With an all new RZR coming out to compete with the new Maverick, the resale on these things is about to take a major hit.. You might consider waiting.

These things all depreciate like used hand grenades, the Polaris being one of the better one and has by far the best aftermarket available.

You don't need the turbo, but you will need a real clutch like the turbo car comes with or youll be blowing belts in glamis so prepare to save then spend money.

You can add power down the line in numerous ways from a turbo to big bore stage 1-4 kits etc...
Youll have enough power to outrun the stock suspension in the dunes with either car.

There is always a better one right around the corner so you'll be forever waiting if you wait for the best one, and being the stock king is high priced and a one season deal anyway so its more about what you do to the car than getting the latest and greatest because every year they churn these things.

Get a car- have fun.

The farther you get away from stock the more headaches you'll experience, less reliability and the more money you lose at resale time.

The Turbo is nice when you have a car load of people.
The EVO reflash is the farthest I went with performance and it's all that stock chassis/suspension can handle and it's a hand full.

Shop around and buy when your blush fades.
Season is just about over and prices will soften plus Polaris has made no secret that the Rzr is due for a new Chassis, suspension and driveline so the prices will soften considerably.

When do they plan to unveil the '18 models? It's a mixed feeling - a fresh model with upgrades is awesome, but Polaris has a history pushing the new models out with issues .

Wouldn't be surprised if the '18's start at around $30K.
That's a big drink of water for most families.

I have driven many turbo and non turbo cars and there is no comparison regardless of the terrain used in. The turbo's internally bypassed shocks are way better, the clutching is way better and the power difference is huge. I really think it depends on the person and their driving style. If cruising the desert with a car full of peeps is going to be the primary use then it is likely the extra HP and suspension of the turbo would not be appreciated. If aggressive driving is your deal then I feel it would be a mistake not to spend the extra $'s.

For me there is never enough HP in whatever I own. I bought a 17 XPT4 for that very reason, I enjoy the added power on sand and dirt. Being able to throw the car around is a lot of fun for me and the more power the better.

X2, I have the same one, plenty of power. If I went to the dunes all of the time I would consider the turbo. The non turbo is fun and fast, I have no regrets buying it. For 20K they are pretty damn amazing.

I bought a 2017 xp1k4 in Nov, love it! Perfect for the normal desert riding we do. Haven't had the peddle to metal yet, goes plenty fast enough...

Well- Thank you everyone for the input. After shopping around I pulled the trigger on this XP4 1000 today. The kids are super stoked! Won't get much use till after summer, but we're gonna take it out tomorrow morning for a little put and get familiar with it

I think you'll be very happy. :thumbsup

I have a plastic half windshield that's still in great shape that you can have if that's the direction you're going.
