Hey Guys:

I am wondering if anyone has any info they cam share about Slash X or Rasor road. We head out to Spangler Hills all the time, and I am getting kinda burnt on that place. I think we have ridden every trail out there 10 times over. Enjoy Dove Spring and Jawbone, dont like the crowds or the rangers. We have an off road car and also enjoy riding tight technical single track and hill climbs on our dirt bikes. I am looking for something new and different.

I have have heard a lot about Slash X and Rasor road but have never been there. Where are these places located? are they far from each other? Are they big areas to ride? Whats the riding on dirt bikes like? How are the trails for an off road car? What is the camping situation like? I rode through Afton Canyon once while riding the Mojave trail from Barstow to Laughlin so I have see a little of Rasor but not that much. Any info, pics, videos, etc.. is greatly appreciated.

I'll leave it in the lounge if you like, but I think you'll get better info in the offroad section. Might take a little longer, but at least it won't get blown off page 1 in 30 minutes..

TPC I believe is familiar with the area.

Rasor rd is 13 miles south of Baker. I have been ridding there for about 10 years give or take. There is a lot of fun stuff to ride from trails to a small dune area. I have not been in a couple of years, last I knew the lower road was tough if you don't have 4 wheel drive. I got stuck on the way out with my 30' toy hauler so after that I park up top and ride the bikes down to all the trails. its cool for a change of pace, but after a couple of trips out and the new scenery wears off its a little boring. We used to make about 2 trips a year out there. Its worth the trip for a change of scenery. :thumbsup

Rasor Road is one of my favorite places to camp and ride, and is by far my wife's favorite. I actually proposed to my wife there.

There's a ton of different types of terrain, including a half-bowl, sand, hard pack and even a cool water crossing.

Tons of destinations to check out, and it's far off the beaten path so not too many rangers or knuckleheads. And there's a great shooting area.

Check this site out.
http://www.rasorranch.com

Keith, the guy who runs the site, has some property out there. Tons of good info and a super cool guy.

The main con is the rutted road to get into the better areas. It's not really too bad, friends with Class A pushers pulling big utility trailers have no problem getting in. Hell, Chip pulls his monster rig out there. Just be smart and use common sense, pickgoood lines. But the legend of the road is one big thing that keeps out the riff-raft.

Slash X Ranch Cafe is on Barstow rd south of the 15 a bit. we used to go off of the 15 at stoddard wells / bell mountain exit and head east for minimun 12 miles, camping is legal there. if you stay on the dirt road heading east you can get to slash x by bike or buggy. its about a 30 min ride from where we used to camp... we camped out there for atleast 6 years ( last time in 09 ) and probably saw 4 rangers total. there is also camping behind slash x

Slash X is in Johnson Valley and closer to Lucerne. Good riding and wide open in term of limitless trails.

Rasor Rd is fun, but very small. Some small sand dunes and not that wide open. I ride a MC so it is a tad boring for me. I have lots of friends that go to Rasor and love it.

Slash X is on Barstow rd, (247), south of the 15, just before the 15/40 split. Wal-Mart about a block off the freeway. South on Barstow rd a few miles, (5?), Slash X on the right. Stoddard Wells road is before Slash X on the right. Dirt road but easily passable in what ever you got. Keep an eye out for it after you go through some small hills. There is a Kiosh at the beginning of the road. Camped there in the RV's New Years 2010/2011, only ones out there. If you like the crowds you can park on the west side of the riding area off the 15 and Lenwood or Outlet Center Drive exits. Hotels, In-N-Out, etc. there too, but noisy, dusty and crowded. From the east side about a 10 min ride to slash X, 30 min ride to In-N-Out. The off road course can be used anytime races are not going on. Lots of dirt roads, washes, trails, but have not found any sand dunes there. Rangers seem to migrate around Slash X and the crowded camping areas. Never had any problems with them.

My 2 cents....
I ride 2 wheels.

Slash-X- Been there once to grab a beer w/ some buddies via outlet center.First and last time. If you like clapped out,rocky,rutted,cement-hard dirt and want to hang out w/ every guy who "just got a sweet banshee and is gonna tear it up w/ all 10 of his friends/family riding it like a 2 dolla ho" then go for it.I used to ride wild wash across the street all the time to get some quick training in, too bad that's gone,or you can try to poach,it's private prop according to SB code enforcement, you need a permission slip and the owners deed in hand so he says.... great close riding.

Agreed:thumbsup Jawbone and Dove Springs are epic for two-wheels, love that place, you can see an occcasional bear up in the mtns.

Rasor-176 miles from Newport Beach.Been there lotsa times. Wide open sandy wash trails, you can mob a buggy/truck for miles, small sand dunes, remote and not a lot of rookies running around like the prior area mentioned;) I like it, but you can conquer it in a weekend. The ride to Afton is great, scenic and lots to see.Rasor Rick is super cool and is always welcoming folks to the ranch if he's there.Attached pic is at rasor.

I like Boone Road out in Johnson valley for locality and overall terrain, rode there last weekend, close for me 135 miles from my home in Newport, day ride is justifiable. Tons of open terrain for a truggee or the like and tech stuff for moto.

How is Spangler Hills? I looked it up actually prior to my trip last weekend.......

Thanks for the info, your info sounds pretty spot on for the types of riding we like.

I did a bit of research online for both spots before I posted and kinda figure the terrain was really rocky and that Rasor might be a bit small.

As I said I have ridden Spangler more than I like to mention- I love the place but have been going there for about the last 10 years and looking for something different. Like many we all have a lot of money tied up in toys and rigs and we only seem to go to a few places and there is so much more out there to check out.

If you haven't been riding out there its definitely a must see. The riding is pretty awesome; you can find almost anything from tight single track, to sandy washes, to hill climbs. You can also ride into Randsburg for a few beers and lunch. Chances are you won?t ride the same trail twice on a long weekend, but over the years, it?s become more popular and you start to see more people out there. If you head out on an off weekend there is usually not many people and plenty of open camping. However on the big weekends (Thanksgiving, New Years, etc?) it?s almost like the old days in Glamis which isn?t bad but plan on seeing a shit ton of people on the trails

Rasor Road is a fraction of the space. Literally.

Rasor Road is awesome. Used to go camping and dirtbike riding there monthly when I lived in CA. Miss that place. Always loved going out and watching the freight trains.

Everything has already been said, so lemme throw something new in here for you...

Check out Monanche Meadows this summer. Kenedy Meadows is awesome too, but its strictly for 2 wheel vehicles. Monache has trails for everything you have, along with rivers, pine trees, meadows and fishing. ;)

It is a BITCH to get to! If you have a gas truck, you'll prolly have to drop in in 4 wheel low, and leave the front hubs unlocked to get up there. (thats the only way my ol gas truck would make it towing my toyhauler up there) Seven mile road is STEEP. If you have a diesel, you will be fine, but you will still need to go sloooooooow and easy.

Its a long drive, hard to get to, and WAY off the beat'n path (youll have to take everything with you), but is very rewarding trip for sure. :)
