I'm out of 1506 but I'm doing my foreman meeting in Ontario and steward in Buena Park so I'm switching my books to 2361

Nice. I'm from 209 but I've been attending local 150 foreman meetings. Thinking about transferring my books there. Dan McDonald has been speaking at local 150 foreman meetings. Getting really sick of hearing about hillary Clinton every fucking meeting.

Vic;

This resume will be an introduction of you to people who are looking for not only instructors, but people who can be role models for employees.
A good resume paints a picture of who you are, where you've been, where you want to go... and most importantly where you are qualified to go
So make sure you cover all of that.

When you get a interview, they will ask you why you want the position. Tell them. Tell them you want to help guide the careers of those that follow you, you want to help set the standards, both for the quality of work but the quality of the people who come after you. Instructors lead by example. You need to make them understand that your life experience and the changes you've made in yourself are the driving force that has you seeking this position.

Being an instructor and teaching, well, teaching anything is a calling. It can be frustrating and rewarding...sometimes in the same moment.
That someone that told you to apply because the see a teacher in you. They want to see if you have the calling in you. Even if you don't get it this time someone is watching. Evaluating. Thinking about the future of your profession and your company and where you fit in it.
And that is a good thing.
If you see this in yourself this could be just the beginning of your career...you never know what you will be teaching next, or where.

I was always told instructors were the ones that couldn't cut it in the field:p

I have a lot of patience...... Sometimes, but dealing with a bunch of apprentices all day, fuck that. Don't get me wrong, I'll teach you everything I know, but I gotta feel you're worth it.

No Ot or DT would suck too

Thats Inspectors not instructors

Hey Vic,
Just curious, and not starting any b.s..

Did you serve an apprenticeship? I wondered if things have changed much since I did mine back in '98.
When I went through we had to have hours in formwork, metal studs and rock, interior and exterior finish, hardware, etc. There was a set number of hours in each area. Also classroom relayed instruction. We went to school 1 day every 2 weeks during the regular school year.
I was just wondering about the apprenticeship program out west. Didn't know if they started specializing in the different types of stuff or if it's a similar deal.

Good luck with your prospective position!

Yup. Out here it's an 8 stage program. Youre sponsored as a first stage. You need to work 1000 hours before going to school. After that you go to school every 3 months for one week. If you have enough hours you can upgrade to the next stage. I want to say it's 9 credits required and 600 hours. Every week in school is 6 credits. So you upgrade every other time in school or two in a row when you bank 3 credits, as long as you have the hours. The program should take 3-4 years. Before you journey out all certs must be current including light gauge welding. Which reminds me I need to re new mine [emoji4]

So originally I had just planned to throw something together real quick but after reading all the thread I decided I needed to really put some time and thought into it. I'm going to sit down later today and try to come up w something impressive. I also need to figure out what kind of teaching credentials and how to get them. I may start another thread on that. I've been extremely stressed and actually slipping backwards a little bit it's motivating me to try and make new strides. I've always known I'm very passionate and very emotional. Sometimes it works in my favor but sometimes I drive myself crazy. This is just something I need to try so that even if I don't like it or don't get it I can be proud that I tried and gave it my all.

I'm not union but was impressed as hell at the carpenters union training program here in San Diego. I replaced some AC for them & saw how they did classroom plus built structures, tore them down & did it again. Now that's hands on! I wish they'd do that kind of shit with the HVAC trade.

We are doing big things down in San Diego. A major contractor just came on and we are trying to get their wages close to ours. Here in la we are after 70% market and we are close. That will help them as wells. And that's the position I'm going for. Instructor in the training center.

Have you talked with any of the other instructors and ask them what they did to get hired.?

My direct rep who made me a Steward was a teacher before being a rep. He basically
Said give me the resume and I'll push it. I always had class w him and he knows me well what I'm capable of and o always did very well in class. It's all pretty simple math

What it really comes down to is showing your face at all the union meetings and getting involved. I've always done my own thing for the most part but now realize I need to get involved

Maybe a little late but....
With a resume you want to focus on your achievements obviously. Try to incorporate the following
Teamwork oriented
Problem solving
Initiative/Leadership
Interpersonal Skills
Challenge/stress/pressure

Use a clear example and be sure to quantify the result...."I implemented project x on time and under budgets which resulted in a $2.5 million savings and a 3% reduction in Y"

I used the STAR method in interviews. STAR stands for situation, task, action, results.

Good stuff here. http://theinterviewguys.com/behavioral-interview-questions-and-answers-101/

Best of luck.

Yes going to meetings and running for different committees diffently helps getting your name out there.

I think your over thinking this resume. You are already in the union and have run work in the past. Your not applying for some law firm. Lol. The people that are reading the resume are construction guys just like you.

But yea it's guys just like me that are going to be looking it over. Short wearing flip flopping tank top wearers [emoji23]

Maybe constitution is different. My experience has been that you are not only applying for the current open position, but also the position after that.

Put yourself in the company's shoes. What do you think hey want over the next 3-5 years.

I've never hired a person whom I did not think was capable not only for the open position but also several steps higher.

This is why I want to put some time into it. Overall goal would be to become a union rep so from this point forward they will be watching and evaluating. I'll have to start making lots of changes to myself again

Just fill out a mock resume with just your past job and any other qualifications that you think may help and show it to your mentor. Let him look it over and see what he says. Your job history and staying at one company shows that you aren't a flake and bounce from company to company. Our instructors are hired more for what they have done in the field, then what they look like on paper.

Yes construction is different. Been doing it for over 34 years and hiring and firing for the last 18. Never read a resume yet. :D

So I'm not supposed to tell anyone but figured it would be safe to come and share my excitement on here. I got a phone call today and was basically told there's a full time schedule for me and I can start Monday. I'm excited but I also have a weird feeling. Don't really know what to tell my current employer. I have to go back to Vegas and turn in all my cards and electronics. Hopefully all goes well. This is what I've been wanting for some time but it's going to be a big change.

Congrats, now do the right thing.
Tell new company you need 3 weeks until you can start, then give current company 2 weeks notice. Quitting on the same day burns major bridges and construction is a small industry. You don't want that to follow you to your next job or the job after that.

Agree 100%. Employees have done that to me and I wished nothing but failure for them. You don?t just pack up and leave.

Do employees get a two week notice when they're laid off? :)

I agree. Always give a notice unless the place you work for is fucked and/or owes you money. I've seen people who work and go without pay for weeks.

A guy I worked for didn't pay almost half of his employees the week before thanksgiving. Total POS.

Yup, if you see the signs the company is failing, haul ass out of there. If not, you never know when you might be asking for your job back. Something about green grass😀

I would never burn a bridge but in this case I hope that they can understand. I've sacrificed a lot for this company. I've put in crazy hours and left my family for a few months. This is what's best for my family and I really hope they understand that. Unfortunately someone is unable to teach and they are asking me to fill in. If I say give me two weeks they will just fill the spot w the other guy whos going for this spot.

Vic, don't listen to these assclowns. You do what's right for u and ur family.

Sometimes it takes burning a bridge to get ahead,

I do agree in normal conditions to try and give some notice, but what is normal, and employers will fire/ layoff with no notice. It's a two way street

VIC, 8 years in the trades will provide an uphill challenge to the position your are seeking. What you learn in the field cannot be taught in a year or two in school, that is why the apprentice program is 4 years plus the required hours of work.

Why are you going for this job, seems to me you are at least 10 years younger than you should be. You are in your prime of learning the trades, I get that it's tough, but don't bale out on the path you are on with your company. You and I both know you have much more to learn, but it's going to take 50 - 60 hours a week when you are given the opportunity and that is expected and will be for a decade. Again, I get why your looking for an out, but at your age I would think the Union would ask the same question I am. Why are you trying to get out of the field? How would you answer that question? Your body wearing down in your 30's wont be the answer they are looking for. Playing devils advocate here, if you really love what your doing and want to drop your bags, your going to become a Superintendent. If you really want to advance your career you would go to work for a GC. That would really expand your career and ability to train others, I know it would as we have several Supts that were metal stud framers and several more that are GF's that came from the metal stud framing background. When PCS went under we hired several of the better Supts and made them GF's.

Again, it seems like you want to get out of the crucible of learning early that is the Carpenters Union, just my .02 as a member since 1991.

It is bail. MilkMoney bales... or maybe he pays some union guy to bale for him :)

On a related note, in my field someone once asked me how long I want to wear a tool belt for. And if you don't want to wear it for your entire career, it is best to take it off ASAP.

I already work for a gc as a general foreman and I've already been offered a super spot. I don't want it. I've wanted to teach since my first time going to class. The union wants younger guys. They know there's still a solid 30 years left in me. It's different these days. I get what your saying but you're a little off. i hope this works out but if it doesn't I have no problem staying in the field.
