I tried the E3 spark plugs in a little commuter car I had last year and was pretty happy with them. I did notice a slight increase in mileage (about 1-2 mpg) and i've always wondered how they would work in a boat. I wonder if you would get any more RPM or MPG out of them?

Gotta believe the parts guy. Do you know which one for a 500EFI?

You have any numbers off the old plug? Best way to get the correct plug. I would assume its a standard gm plug

NGK in everything except FoMo and GM. Ford's like Motorcraft. GM's like Delco.

mjc,

If the plugs need replacing install what the manufacturer originally used or as Tyro recommended, the direct crossover Ngk 4323 which is the direct cross to that mr43t plug. All you need is a plug in the heat range that is recommended for your engine needs. Make sure your tune is on. All you need is a spark to make things happen. In a boat that is used for recreation, I sincerely doubt that you will see a huge difference in mileage or a noticeable increase in seat of the pants performance by installing 20.00 apiece spark plugs. Over the years I have spent more than what I should have on all sorts of parts that were advertised to do this and do that, however, did not produce the increase in performance the ADVERTISEMENT claimed. Trust your engine builder. Just my thoughts, your results may vary. Have a great boating season this year.

Good point by Hallet Dave,, I don't go for the high dollar plugs. For one thing, boats don't run the high miles that cars are expected to do between tune ups. I like Autolite and NGK plugs,, using Autolite in many engines since they are readily available at the local parts store.

I will chime in with a professional opinion on the platinum and iridium stuff that is out there, if your motor is NOT a Coil On Plug Sequential Fuel Injected engine DO NOT USE THEM.

Anything with a distributor and ignition wire setup should run regular resistor type plugs. Pure Race stuff like Mags are a different story, they require a plug solely made for the application and heat range.

Went with the NGK's, now does anybody know how to set timing and a 500EFI. I have just finished replacing valve springs with heads on and would like to confirm it is still correct after all these years.

In order to lock the timing in for checking timing, you will need something like the CodeMate - MEFI Code Reader or Techmate Scan Tool. Once locked in, the engine speed should automatically increase to a predetermined RPM when the timing tool is connected to the DLC harness connector or the scan tool is put in the service/timing mode.

Compatible with MEFI-1 thru MEFI-4 marine
EFI systems. CodeMate serves as an EFI fault
code indicator and a base timing service tool.
CodeMate flashes fault code sequences on its
built-in malfunction indicator lamp and also
allows base spark advance to be set when used
with a timing light. This tool is not
compatible with MEFI-5, MerCruiser
PCM-555, ECM-555, Volvo EGC or other
marine EFI systems.

Dance with who brung ya.
Use what the mfg recommends.

Some years back peoples outboards and two strokes were grenading for no apparent reason.
Then,, the common link with them was the split-fire spark plug. Obviously the reason and Split Fire balked on the guarantee.

Split Fire went bankrupt, but still occasionally raises it's ugly head from the grave under new brand names with convincing advertising.

Run the recommended on the 500 EFI. The only issue with the NGK's is that they collect carbon faster then the MR type plugs. NGK's in everything else works, but you will find with the 500's and 525's the NGK's electrodes get a build up of carbon around the base which can eventually cause detonation. Dealt with it on customers boats before. Went back to Delco's on the Merc motors.
