Ok, the bourbon thread has been going for 3+ years. It's time for a tequila thread. I'm no expert but I've tried my fair share and my collection is growing.

Big thing in the tequila world is additive vs. no additive tequila (sweet shit vs. actual tequila). But I will admit some of the moderate additive tequilas are good. Some of the heavy additive brands are straight syrup that you could pour on pancakes or ice cream.

You have blanco/silver/plata, reposado, anejo, extra anejo, cristalino. Hell, they even finish some of these tequilas in red wine barrels and call them Rosa tequilas!

So I'll start with one of my favorites: Tequila Ocho Anejo

It's relatively light for an anejo. It's additive free, so it's not sweet. But it's smooth and a little too easy to drink on a block of ice.

Used to be able to grab it our local nice liquor store for $50. It has since jumped to $65.

They did a limited release a few years ago with some finished in bourbon barrels and some finished in rum casks. The rum cask version was awesome.

I’m a fan of Tres Gen👍

We tried the comedians Ron White/Mike Mendoza brand called Number Juan.
It was pricy at $100, but was surprisingly good.👍

Bought this for my son. He did a short stint as a bartender earlier this year. This was his favorite. I’ll let you know the day after Christmas 😏

This is probably the king of the additive tequilas. Not overly sweetened but definitely something added on the backend. It's got that caramel/vanilla hint to it.

A great first step into drinking tequila neat or on ice.

A bottle used to be like $85 three years ago. It's now $150

I love Anejos, neat or on the rocks if it's a hot evening.

3 of My favorites

Tres Manos Anejo. This is the Tequila for someone that drinks whisky but says "I don't like tequila"
Aged in French Oak, American Oak, and Bourbon Barrels and then blended together, this is like Sherry aged Scotch of tequila, very rich and smooth in flavor
About $70 a bottle
tres_manos_ultra_anejo___36814.png

Porfidio Anejo. This is the tequila that made me realize that Tequila doesn't suck. Smooth vanilla cream flavors. If you want to read up on it, the story of Porfidio and the owner of the brand and his battles with the Mexican government over how he made his tequila are awesome. The Mexican government ended up stripping him of his Tequila license, so it cannot be called Tequila anymore. So he calls it Super Jalisco.

About $150 a bottle (The blanco is only $30 a bottle and excellent for margs)

Chamucos Anejo. This is my every day sipper, The husband and wife that own the distillery actually live in Henderson NV. I met them at a fixed course dinner where they brought tequilas and cocktails to pair with each of the courses. Love this stuff, just a great example of what a good Anejo should be.

About $60 a bottle

Casamigos is a go to lately. 1942 is my number 1 fav. All other tequilas are measured against it IMO.
Casamigos is solid, especially on price point. The repo and anejo are a little too sweet for me.

I've had both a few times with a orange slice... great combo.

This Chamucos is the next one that I was going to post! I like the repo and the anejo.

It hasn't gotten popular yet, so it's still reasonable.

This and the Ocho Anejo are my go-to sippers.

This gal is a real buzzkill...

"And why does one brand contain literal ethanol?"

What a stupid bitch🤣

It's called alcohol Karen, that's what ethanol is

All joking aside she does make a good point about these "boutique" liquors.... So many are complete garbage.

Edit: in the youtube comments she clarifies her ethanol mistake, she meant to say methanol"

I'm normally not a big tequila guy but this on ice with a lime at the lake is awesome. I heard about it and my parents bought me a bottle to celebrate me passing a professional exam.

I was at a party few weeks ago and this was being passed around. I already had a few drinks before so I don’t know if it had anything to do with it but , this was very smooth and easy to drink . Want to say even better then clase azule. I ended up buying a bottle to try again in hopes it is as good as I thought since it’s a 1/3 of the price of Clase Azule. 😁

The owner of a Long Beach studio we used to shoot at started a tequila brand.
It’s sort of a racket TBH, but there are definitely a lot of legit companies/brands out there as well if you search them out.

At any rate, what stuck in my mind was his claim that his costs for the bottles (they were fancy) and labels was waaay higher than the tequila itself.

Good thread. I've been getting into different tequilas over the last few years and it's been fun. You hit the nail on the head when you brought up additives. I have learned that "100% Agave" tequilas can actually have a small amount of artificial flavors added, and the industry makes these additives extra concentrated so that a small amount has a big impact on flavor. 1942 and Clase Azul have additives to make them taste like vanilla and caramel.

I'm currently sipping on some El Tesoro single barrel reposado, one of my favorites. Additive-free and traditionally made.

When I was into Tequila, I really liked this stuff.
It's got a 'Distinct' flavor that some may or may not like . . .
It gets pretty good ratings . . . worth a try if You're into to trying something new.

Love tekillya. Big fan of sipping a shot per beer 👌🏽

My #1 go-to is Espolòn Blanco for cocktails and margs. It’s inexpensive for a tequila made from 100% blue weber agave ($22 for 750ml).

My #1 go-to for sipping is Fortaleza Blanco. It’s inexpensive ($58 for 750ml) but tastes like a $200 craft tequila and the dude makes every bottle without any electricity. They literally still used a donkey in early processing until it passed a few years ago.

This is by far the best I’ve ever had. Smooth, great flavor. Not too sweet. Better than Clase Azul.

Don Julio 70th Anniversary is good cold and cheap at $75.

My wife is the Tequila drinker in our house. She sips it and says if you have to shoot it that it isn't worth drinking. I know she likes patron and some anejo, but don't remember the brand. My neighbor and I will do bourbon flights of the new stuff we get and he keeps saying we have to do Tequila flights. I tell him I am not a fan and he says I would like his. He said he only buys extra anejo. He also has a stash of good Cuban cigars to go along with our flights.

From what you guys are saying in this thread I should give his a try.

IMHO the best sipping tequila comes from aging in oak casks…so gold.

Silver isn’t aged so better for mixed drinks.
Mostly because I don’t want to ruin good, aged tequila by mixing it with anything else.

Just my opinion.
Same rules for rum.

Best tequila I've ever had was from my neighbor and friend John Gonzales.
His dad's neighbor on his ranch in Mexico made it.
A little terracotta jug with an Agave stamped on it.

Just an aside, John was as a white as sheet, his ancestry is German, dude couldn't go out in the sun without getting fried.

Not really a straight tequila. But this stuff in a smoked glass is great.

A good aged Tequila is great as a sipper. I'm sipping on a glass of Tears of Llorona extra anejo as I'm typing this.

That said, I would encourage you to try sipping a quality blanco to see what you think. With a blanco, you really taste the agave, and a well made blanco can be very smooth.

I'd suggest trying any of the following blancos as a sipper:

Caschuin Tahona Blanco
Fortaleza Blanco
G4 Blanco
Don Fulano Blanco
Tequila Ocho Blanco

These are all very good blancos with different flavor profiles, and all are additive-free and traditionally made.

Late night Christmas tequila with John McClane!

Pasote Anejo - additive free, smooth, great flavor

But the Pasote Blanco is the most interesting.

First tried it at Fish Gaucho in Paso Robles. Bartender goes “When you try this, think of that wet asphalt smell when it first starts raining. This tequila is made with rain water.” I was a little buzzed and didn’t think much of it. Tried it… mind blown. He was spot on 🤯

Yes, I am Santa. Yes, my cat is obese.

Pasote blanco is one of the first 'good' tequilas that I had. Pasote switched distilleries from NOM1579 to NOM1584 earlier this year. I'm biased, but the stuff coming from 1584 isn't as good as the original out of 1579. If your bottle says NOM1579 on it, make sure that enjoy every glass since it is hard to find those now.

I had a glass of El Tesoro Paradiso last night. It's a really clean tasting Extra Anejo, lots of agave flavor with some oak from being aged 5 years. Traditionally made, additive free.
