So I'm leaving my office this afternoon with one of my Deputies behind me. A call comes from another Deputy who had stopped a truck near Circle K and the driver (female) and passenger (male) bailed out. He caught the female, and was asking for assistance to find the male. Only description was a white guy with a white (wife beater) shirt, and he ran by a real estate shop toward the canal.
Since there were already 2 Officers on scene with the truck and another on the way, I duck into the Keys to see if I can spot the guy from the other side of the canal. I turn down Hopi (the first street) to see if he went that way. After driving about half way down and not seeing anything I start to turn around when I see the guy jump the wall at the end of the street.
Now, I'm in civies, in an unmarked Expedition with red/blues on the dash. I rip the lights off the dash, so he doesn't make me, and continue slowly up the street toward this idiot, who's now kinda walking/jogging down the street. He's not paying any attention to me, since he's looking over his shoulder every 2 seconds.
When he's about 20 feet in front of the truck, I jam it in park, jump out identify myself and calmly request that he kindly lie down on the pavement. (or words to that effect
) Since he's looking down the barrel of a .40 Glock, which now must have looked like the Holland Tunnel to him, he decided he would be better off to comply with my simple request, than to resist. I cuff the guy and call in the others to come get him.
Turns out he had meth in the truck, paraphernalia on himself, and was on probation. We've been in contact with his PO in Havasu, who is in the process of revoking him, and sending him to prison. The chick he was with also had a warrant.
So another tweaker is off the streets, and all you Keys residents can go another day without your vacation homes being broke into.
