We never did come up with a cheap / GPS solution to that in the other thread.. I talked to my buddy and he said they have a new product coming out in November that would be applicable to that style of thing..

This video just popped up on my FB feed though.. Not sure how it works or much about it, but for 29.00?? Might be worth finding out?

There was something called trackR on Facebook a while back. It was a startup type company you had to order first with like a 8 month away delivery of product. It's seemed cool. It was a Keychain sized tracking device that was easily hidable. Not sure of its limits. Wouldn't LoJack work in a boat??

Dave... As a person with business experience you should know better than to believe that a $29.00 product will out shine products that are designed for what you are looking for. :p

Lo jack sux.. It isn't nearly what people think it is.. Maybe back in the day, but the triangulation system compared to GPS is like whiffle ball compared to the major leagues.

As a person that understands technology and how cheap shit is.. A 29.00. "Find me" disc doesn't seem that unfeasable.

Something about having to be on top of it or near it within some kind of mileage to be useful

Epirb. with gps Would not be hard to wire up something to recive a signal to start pinging. With gps on them they get down to about 100' you could tap into the water detection part on an automatic model with some type of cell receiver.
Should not be that hard to rig up.
A plb might work too, but the have small batterys and only ping for about a day, where a epirb is min 48 hours.

Its even already a boating product. So if you could design a duel system there would be a market.

Here are the basics on a locator;

FYI, I have 25 years experience working with trackers beginning with Teletrac, which is still sold.

Most""GPS" locators work on a cell based data network, so a monthly fee is always involved. You need cell service, the more towers available the better. Ability to locate within 100-500'. This type of unit of properly installed, would be best for a boat in Havasu area. You need a batter back up, and hide it!!!!

Lojack is a self contained transceiver, so it sleeps fr up to 10 years, and when the car is reported stolen, a signal is sent from thousands of towers across the country and Mexico. The unit "awakes", and transmits. Thousands of police cars and LE helicopters have receivers that can track the signal. The need to be within 2-10 miles to do this, and the stolen car must be within the range of a tower to be activated. Havasu does NOT have a tower, but I believe they still have on unit that has a Lojack receiver. So if a stolen activated car drives through the city, and the Havasu PD is is out on patrol, it will pick up the signal and be able to locate it within a few minutes. The ability of LE helicopters to track a unit is amazing, at times from 115 miles out, then they send in ground units. No monthly charge and it uses UHF frequencies so parking under a shelter or 1 floor in an underground garage, the signal will still leak out. Lojack can generally locate your car in an area immediately as their twoers pick up the ping of the unit, their 24/7 former LE employees drive out and assist LE when necessary to locate the unit. The unit is the size of a pack of cigs, so storing it in the upper cavity of a trailer works wekk, and it sees through the roof, etc. Best for race trailers that will be towed and storage in any major metro area.

My 2 cents, if you reside in a metro area and do not need an immediate GPS locate for your toys, go with Lojack, it works well. I have it on most everything I own that has wheels. On most cars your get a very nice yearly policy discount too.

Lastly a true GPS satellite transmitter with transmit the signal to the satellite from most anywhere, but if the car is parked under a shelter, or perhaps even in a metal storage garage, no dice, it needs to see the sky!

ALL GPS units like ALL electronic devices have one short coming, power. They need to have enough power to last until located. A tiny unit will never work for more than a day or two, do not kid yourself on this. It needs to be wired into the 12 volt system WITH a gel cell battery back up so it can last at least 7-14 days disconnected from the boat or car battery.

Most decent units last many years. BPI

I must be the only one that wouldn't want my shit back if it was stolen. Just knowing that some scum bag had it is enough to move on.

I put a product similar to what you posted called Tile on my daughters teddy bear. But it does not work via GPS just bluetooth. You can sound it so it chimes but then it also tracks and logs where it is at all the time when it is in range.

The whole world comes apart when she cant find her stuffed bear. Would not work for tracking a vehicle though.

A friend of mine created this system a couple years ago. I have seen it in action on a race weekend, when he got a text when the trailer door opened while we were eating.

Every time the vehicle stops for I think it's 5 minutes, the device will send a text or email to the phone of the owner the next time the vehicle moves. Like immediately. So if it is not you moving the vehicle, or you opening the door, you know immediately, and can do something. And you can tell the police where it is, where it is going, on which road, etc. If it can see cell service, anywhere on the globe, it will report exactly where it is.

On the race weekend, it was a friend of his who came to get some zipties out of his trailer. But had it been someone coming to take something, he would have had the knowledge to do something.

It is a killer system. It is not CHEAP, but it is affordable, especially with the longer subscriptions, and on the race cars, you get a decent hit off the insurance. I would assume that a boat might get a similar discount.
