Not free but fast and reliable.
If you want free, try limeWire, they also include the occasional virus at no xtra charge.

If you're interested in a slightly less affordable alternative to pirating music, I suggest you check out Amazon.com.

They don't have everything but they have quite a bit, they charge about a buck per song, and it's all DRM free.

Limewire works, but watch out for viruses as mentioned above.

Bittorrents are an okay source, but you typically only find whole albums.

Another method you can use is a music search using google.

*Go to google.com
*Paste the following line into the search box. Just substitute the term "Nirvana" for any band or song you are looking for, and your search will lead you to open indexes that contain downloadable music files. Make sure you keep the double quotes.

-inurl: (htm|html|php) intitle:"index of" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size +(wma|mp3) "Nirvana"

After trying a bunch of different services, I found this one.
I have used it for 4 or 5 years now and never had a problem.

It's fast and it's free :thumbsup

I use rapidshare. The thing with is, you need to find the link from someone who uploaded it to RS. You can't just search RS for the files.

I only use iTunes. All the free web sites.......when you download music you also download lots of viruses and spyware. You'll pay a lot more getting your computer cleaned up after you use those sites.

Thier spyware also hunts down your passwords and credit card numbers off your computer and spreads them all over the Intenet.

Good luck with that!

Nothings free....especially on the Internet.

I've used limewire in the past, but lately found that it was harder to find new music on there. I'm not that concerned with viruses. It's my work computer...we'll just pay someone to fix it and I'll blame it on the interns:D

I think if ya pay the small fee for supercharging,, it'll bring up more sources.
Wife uses both Limewire and iTunes and you can load your Limewire into itunes.

It pays to put ALL your music onto iTunes, then burn them onto CD's and put them away.

If you replace your computer or it goes south on you ya loose all your iTunes,, or at least thats been our experiences.
Then with the CD's, you can upload them back into your account.

I can usually find most of what I want using Torrents. Microtorrent is a good lightweight simple torrent client. To my understanding, the RIAA law dogs pursue torrent downloaders less aggressively. I don't see how it's possible for them to search your download folder (short of fully hijacking your computer) unless you have the torrent turned on and then only what you are seeding at the time. Also, if you see a whole album usually it's possible to only download the files you want...unless they zipped it.

Occasionally I'll use bearshare lite which can also interact with Limewire, but you gotta be careful with those programs. Lots more junk and bad stuff floating around those P2P networks.

Some good indexing sites are isohunt.com and mininova.org, but that are plenty of others. Wiki torrent and find lots of good info.

Apple fought to make that illegal. They wanted to have it so if your hard disk crashed, you'd have to buy all the music again. My understanding is this usage contract was challenged and deemed not legal so it's now OK to back up your iTunes.

Gotta love a big business that wants to milk everyone for all they are worth. Isn't that right, djunkie?

That's not true about iTunes.....if you loose all your music for any reason, you can re-download all iTunes PURCHASED music for free.

Good to know.
If you can find the ages old first interview with Steve Jobs in Playboy he was accusing everyone else of that.

"They (the competition) want it all" was his take.

Bittorrent Sites like Mininova.org are great for finding music, mostly whole albums are offered, but there is a torrent client called uTorrent that you use to download the torrents, it will allow you to selectively choose what files from the torrent you want. (Legality however well that depends on what country you are from ;))

For Legal downloads Amazon.com is great, no DRM crap, its all high quality MP3, and fast downloads. I take all my spare change to the coinstar at the supermarket and redeem it for no fee towards an amazon.com gift card.
