Your friend really cheaped out on the hard drive. Is Fry's still around? I haven't stepped in one in about 10 years.
Yeah, but at the time it was an all new world and I had very primitive knowledge about computers, it was definitely a starter system.

I believe Fry’s went out of business, I haven’t seen an open one around the greater LA region in quite awhile.

Fry’s in Phoenix closed during Covid.

Tempe’s fry’s turned into an “incredible universe”.

I had a Commodore 64 but was introduced to computers by my mother, who had several computers years before that. I think I got the Commodore in 1984 from Gemco in San Diego, CA.

We used the Commodore 64 in school. Later on, my parents bought a Tandy 1000 for us to use at home.

Not sure what we had after that, but I LIVED for the AOL free minutes 😆 I wonder how many predators I talked to in the chat rooms back then. A/S/L? 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

First one I bought was the Vic-20. Before that I was writing programs on a teletypewriter to operate a 3 axis 500w Laser/robot (R&D shit) then an Intel dual 8088 processor in space and comm! ;)

We got our first multi media computer in the early 90s. A buddy assembled it from components he purchased at Computer Shows. Those shows were very popular in those days. It wasn't cheap, about $1200, I think.

Qantel, mid 70's. The disks were about 2' round and 2" thick.

Somewhere in the garage I have a few floppies, 8" SSSD and 5-1/4" DSDD. None of that wussy 3-1/2" plastic stuff. 😃

chatrooms and forums in the early 2000s were great. Many didn't have passwords, which mean lots of us had multiple screen names. I just to open up three screens, make a few aliases and then start fights with myself. lol. next thing ya know my phone would be ringing and my friends would be asking who the fuck was busting my chops on Banderlog or Street Source or hot boat.com

Once when being interviewed, background check for a security clearance renewal, I was asked if I'd ever done anything illegal on a computer. The interviewer appeared to be a young female contractor, working for the DoD. Without hesitation I replied, Yes. The look on her face was a riot. She lowered her voice and said, Oh No. May I ask what you did? I said, sure. Have you ever heard of Napster? Her eyes got real big and she said, OMG! I did Napster too!

Radio Shack TRS-80 was the first I ever used...wrote some dumb stuff in basic. No drive or floppy to save to, so you had to leave it on all the time. LOL

Jr HS had IBM PC Jr's, the first 256 color computers in 85 or so. Using the old basic calls for points, lines circles, etc, my final 8th grade computer class project was to have it draw the ZZ Top Eliminator album cover. That took months, even working on the same computer my parents bought and had at home. I really wish I had that code still.
