How are they attached? Looks like they are molded by blade?

Interesting indeed. Can it withstand the stresses? Expendable or decades of life? Inexpensive vs stainless?

They don't like sand or rocks and can't be repaired the edges wear from cavitation

I have a hard time believing that they will keep a sharp edge, or even have a sharp edge to begin with.

Couldn't be cheap. Just imagine the tooling, fixtures and other hardware needed to cover the popular current sizes: # of blades, dias, pitch, rake, etc.

I never knew that the weight of the prop was a big deal. I guess maybe with rotational mass? I just don't see the juice being worth the squeeze

Tell that to a guy that wants to win a shootout. :)

Every oz of rotational mass saps HP.

Looks like they have lips at the top and bottom of where they mount that slide under the billet prop hub that I would presume can be taken apart to mount each blade. Crazy. Wonder how they'd hold up spinning 6k RPM behind a 1350HP Merc!?
In big water with big power I don't think they will last long when loading and unloading the props at high rpm in rough conditions. But on the upside, they are lighter, so when your floating in 50 deg water, wearing a lifeline and holding a big ass breaker bar......... 👍

You ever see carbon fiber knives?? Fuckin' razor blade sharp. Like CRAZY sharp.
Interesting - could not find carbon fiber knives on web search. Have a link ?

They use carbon fiber props on planes, but a load of air VS water is a whole different level. IDK if these things would hold up. Then again were using carbon fiber wheels and sports cars and have been using them in racing for years, and they are withstanding several G's in corners. Idk what the load is on a blade from surfacing and then back to grabbing water; maybe it'll work. I like the idea.

There's plenty of others out there. You need to search carbon fiber bladed knife. If you search carbon fiber knife its 99% handle. This was 3rd search down in a random search. I've seen some first hand. They're stupid sharp. Don't know how durable though.

Interesting. I would expect the fibers to come apart when thin enough to be considered sharp.

"This knife will not replace any steel blade and not intended to be used for fine cutting. However, will work in emergency situations."

I wonder what they implying there.

There was a place called Piranha Props in San Luis Obispo several tears ago that made composite props. Component set up with interchangeable blades. Not sure if they're still in business.

I read up a little more on it and it looks like it's a CYA thing. Carbon is obviously not as strong as steel and it appears there's some health issues if you use it for food.

Probably will work well. They use carbon fiber drive shafts for years in drag racing and now production cars as well ie the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

They transfer power better and have some Elasticities and when they do break they just basically fall apart rather than turn into shrapnel

I think you are thinking of ceramic. And they are awesome but, you can’t sharpen them on a stone and they are very easy to chip. But if you don’t drop them or run into bone, they hold a razor sharp edge for a very long time and are effortless to work with.

They remind me of a jailhouse shank! LOL..same benefits from detection I would assume also!

Gotta be honest I have never even heard of one. I wouldn’t think a leading edge would hold up

Blades attach to the hub so you can swap them.. I don’t see carbon fiber working in that environment but it will be interesting to see how it goes
Whatcha mean? From an environmental (UV, salt, etc.) perspective? The carbon is fine. The epoxy, if treated with UV inhibitors, is fine.

If from a strength perspective, which property are you concerned about? Tensile strength? Sheer strength? Brittleness? Stiffness? If the layup and materials are right, it can most likely outperform stainless in most if not all areas.

From an economic perspective, I am not sure that it makes much sense. If the stainless props are holding up, the only thing that you would really save is weight and I dont think prop inertia is a big deal in boating land.

If you catch a shallow spot they'd be toast, but with a stainless prop you could at least tweak it back with a crescent wrench to get you back home.

As far as the carbon fiber knives - don't hit bone, but they will slice right through cartilage, tendons. and ligaments like a hot knife through buddah.

flotsam / jetsam dings on the leading edge will kill these.

My buddy just had his stainless redone. One river trip (didn't hit anything) and there is already a nice new ding in it.

Doesn't take much, that's for sure.

And welcome to RDP, congrats on your 240.
IIDK, I haven’t been arrested inside of Clark County yet. Maby we’ve meet on mead.

thanks for the welcome to RD, I like it here but I am a bit of a sarcastic A-hole :D

Well you called me either a Ex Convict or Gay, which heyyyyy, I'm not the one who just bought a pink boat. :D

Feel us out a bit before you go "all in", there are a bunch of different personalities here and most of us know each other in real life.;)

We have carbon fiber back-stay pendants on a few of our cranes. We don't allow customers to repair them when they chip or break.

I wonder how that will work with these props.

I had written out a funny as hell response but I’m just going to apologize. No need to start a fight, we are all here to have fun. …. I think

You @HitIt right on the nail 👌

I would imagine that with less rational mass, failure of any one blade would result in less damage to the drive.

I was going to make a joke about “these props are for the guys who sleep in carbon fiber pajamas” but the only photo I could find was this:

I kind of understand how a driveline or sail boat mast can have great strength with carbon fiber, but when you thin it out to a razors edge, it just seems like it would eventually fray. What's actually holding the fibers together? Is it just some kind of resin?

The first mistake you made was admitting your one of us sparky types. We get zero respect here on RDP, unless they have an electrical problem, then it's all being nice and shit. I won't even touch on just how many states you need to be licensed in, but you'll find out soon enough.

Fair warning, any thread requesting Electrical Advise or Help, or having an Electrical question is a trap. There will be at least 10 YouTube and Home Depot trained electricians waiting to pounce on you.

You should have said you're a Tin Foil Hat wearing Roofer, nobody fucks with that crazy loveable bastard 🤯 ;)

Pretty much everybody else --- well they're all cops or some derivative thereof, as you've discovered. Have Fun --- 🤣🤣🤣

LMAO

I know better than to argue what the Home Depot clerk has taught. You can never win LOLOL

as far as electrical, in boats and cars, I can do an OK job but the real expert is a very close friend of mine who builds custom harnesses for MoTeC systems. He’s not doing my boat this year because I think in a year or two, I am going to pull my dominator carb and replace it with a throttle body injection system MoTeC ECU, AIM PDM and AIM dash. The wideband O2 bungs are being welded into the exhaust probably today.

Yep, they’re still around and I use them on my deck boat. Great product, easily rebladed, faster than a aluminum prop and you can carry extra blades to replace one damaged ear if needed. The only downside is that they are limited to around 300 hp.

OK, well good luck with that sir, I'm old and old school, so keeping my big Holley. There will be no new bung holes in my boat. 😁
