My buddy picked up a 2002ish Yamaha Waverunner (I think it's an xl800?) For a couple hundred bucks that's been sitting for years.

Cleaned it up, maintenance, replaced a few parts and battery, new fluids.

But it won't start, according to him it's asking for some type of a 4 digit security code?

Previous owner doesn't know of any code or where to find it?

Anyone know anything about these?

I had a 2000 xl1200 it’s a security system to keep the normal people from stealing your PWC or kids randomly starting it. It’s called PADLOC below should reset it.

1) Look under the front hood and find the single wire with a blue connector coming from the instrument panel wiring harness.
(2) Disconnect the wire. The WARNING light should be on, and the ignition will be disabled.
(3) Hold MODE down until you see the current code appear.
(4) Set a four digit code with the A, B, and C buttons. You should hear a long beap after the code is changed.
(5) Reconnect the single wire with the blue connector.
(6) You can now hold down MODE for several seconds with the lanyard in, engine off and switch between START and LOCK modes by typing your code.

Awesome, I'll let him know. Maybe we'll see him ripping around on the wrong side of the river soon 😬

A number of years ago my wife bought a 3 person Yamaha Wave runner, 2002 FX 140, from friends. They were the original owners. But, they’d lost the manual. I was able to download the ‘Owner’s Manual’ from the Internet. It’s been good. I found a good upholstery kit on Amazon. Mostly now used and abused by our grandkids. We use Just Money Motor Sports in LHC for servicing. Others in LHC wouldn’t touch it due to its age. Scary name, but Just Money did good, on time work, at a reasonable price for us. They claimed that 2002 FX 140 had one of the better Yamaha engines. Who knows? As long as it runs.

Yup, Joe at Tech One Connections is your man with Yamaha and Seadoo 2 or 4 strokes. Did an amazing job on my wife's '99 XLT1200 👍
But roll in with an older 2 stroke Kawasaki with world championship heritage and watch the pwc engine guru Dr. Jekyll revert to Mr. Hyde, while launching into a rant about his hatred of working on one and threats of an unimaginable bill later.
Mechanics can certainly be a prickly lot, even worse than us old cranky sparkys 😂;)
