Hi All,
For everyone that has struggled with a desire to improve the performance of their Rhino but tired of the loud exhaust tones of the aftermarket kits I just got the dyno results from John at Pro Shop on my "custom" exhaust.
A little history;
I took my Rhino into the Pro Shop for his 686 kit with a desire to improve the perf of my Rhino. My wife was ademate that the Rhino remain quiet as we use it often in a private community and wants to hear the radio while driving..... John was hesitant to do the 686 kit while maintaining the stock exhaust as he has experiance doing this and the motors do not respond well. My wife and i listened to the Woods and Quiet Muzzy and she said no way, too loud. I had Pro Shop proceed with the kit and as anticipated the engine responded disappointingly.
We drove the vehicle for a year and I kept trying to figure out a solution to this. Then it dawned on me, why not add a second factory muffler. I bought a factory muffler on ebay for $50 and took it to a custom exhaust shop and had them cut the factory header pipe and run individual exhaust to each muffler, $150, for this install. Took them 1 1/2 hours, which included welding the support tab onto the upper crossmember. The original muffler remains in it original position hanging on the original support tab.
Now for the results, the Rhino is actually slightly quieter, which was a nice surprise, as we all thought it would actually be louder, and the vevicle picked up 6.4 HP at peak and between 7-8 on the upper range compared to the initial dyno results. According to John that is only 4 HP less then a Ron Woods exhaust. Not too bad considering it is so damn quiet.....
For anyone considering this as a result of my experiment it is important that the muffler you add be a 700 style muffler as they are much narrower in circumfrance which is required to clear the rear differential.
Anyway, I thought I would share this.
Take Care!
