How are the pups doing? is the runt getting enough to eat on her own or did you switch her over to a bottle?

Good morning. All 9 are seemingly doing well. I have kept a pretty close eye on them and I became concerned I never saw any turds or signs of them. Still today, I haven't seen any poop from the 3 black ones and the big brown female. Since Friday night, I have tried to stimulate every single one of them to get them to poop twice daily, just to make sure momma isn't missing anyone. She IS doing a good job of trying to stimulate them instinctually, but with 9 pups, I'm thinking its likely she would miss one or two or just not give them enough licks to cause a movement.

So on Saturday I called a contact that a member gave me via PM after my original post. She lives 2 miles from me and breeds Frenchies. She came over and confirmed that while momma was making milk, she wasn't making much. There was no obvious indication that they were hungry as they weren't overly restless or crying constantly. She said they looked healthy. She brought come Karo syrup and gave each pup a mouth full which helps with their energy and also with their bowel movements apparently. She gave me some pills that are supposed to kick start milk generation in the mother and they seem to have helped. She also recommended blending some milk based human foods into the kibble for the mother, so I've been using greek yogurt. Sunday evening and this mornings feedings that I watched were much longer duration and the pups slept longer afterwards, I'm thinking that means they're getting more milk. A few have definitely pooped since, but its not the mess that I thought it would be. Apparently that happens in a couple weeks when it turns into a mud wrestling match.

In hindsight, I think the only regret I have is not buying a scale and tracking their weight from birth. If I had that data, it may have helped make a call quicker about the milk situation, although most of them are definitely bigger than they were at birth. I also had not thought to physically check to see how much milk could be squeezed from a nipple, no any idea how hard to squeeze, in all the reading I did, I never once read about checking the mothers milk production.

The runt can fit entirely in the palm of my hand still. Most of the others are more than twice her size. She is active and feeding just as much as all the others, but dosen't seem to be gaining much in size. I try to always move here to the rear when feeding as i read there is typically more milk available back at those nipples. The breeder did not recommend bottle feeding or even supplementing any of them at this point as that could cause the mom to reject the whole litter.

Glad things are going well. Keep in mind that the mother will frequently eat the puppy waste to keep the 'den' clean. That may explain why you aren't seeing as much mess as you thought you would.
I've seen her clean and eat it. Some comes out soft, some not soft at all. You can see the yellow mess on Little Dave's hind end in the last photo, he seems to have a consistency I expected. None of the others show any whitness marks like Dave has. A few of the turds have come out like hardened ear wax and it was obvious they were having difficulty with the bowel movement through their grunting and crying. Have seen youtube videos about water enemas, not sure what the trigger is to decide to stick a water plunger up the little guys back sides. The woman that came over said the Karo syrup would help them.

If you keep one keep the runt . They more likely than not are the best and smartest .
Thanks. I dont plan to keep any pups. If i keep any, it will be the mother. Still on the fence. She is a sweetheart, but may be just a bit too smart and high maintenance for my lifestyle. When im on the road for work, my terrier will stay in a hotel room for hours and wait for me to return just lying around lazily. This one will be bouncing off the walls and yipping the second i am out of her sight. Shes been in all the trash cans, on the counter too, on the dining table, back of the couch. I have started to try and discipline her when i catch her doing things she should not, but for the most part the bad behavior is when im not present so im not sure she understands the action and the discipline connection. If i dont keep her, she will make someone super happy that can handle a high energy dog. For now, I just want to get all the puppies to good homes, get her spayed, and go from there.

edit: i left the door to my bedroom open and just found her on the bed. She left me a nice big warm wet spot. Will be looking for a home for her too, she's worn out her welcome!

Good job indeed so far there EW. Karma to whoever dumped Mama. You are a natural.

Pups need Parvo shots and de wormer/parasiticide, normal sized pups by age and or weight/size prior to sale/adoption. Sometimes regular dewormer paste will not work, and the broad spectrum parasiticide must be used.

Parvo is in the soil, bad in West Texas, wind blows soil. Meinifee hopefully is not affected. Parvo is devastating for pups.
If you keep Moma, Parasiticide monthly, for adult dogs. Flea and tick pills work great, but $. Advantage works well too.

Good job Dad!!

so wait.... a dog showed up on your door step and you helped her birth 9 puppies? Whoa! thats so sweet! Will you be re-homing them yourself or letting a rescue do it? By the off-chance you are, do you have an interest list? :)

Thats a correct summary of the situation.

I dont have a formal list, but there are “6” puppies that have theoretical homes. These are people that reached out saying they want one, rather from my facebook lost/found add or folks in the neighborhood. Earlier in the thread another member posted interest. So, i have a mental list but nothing formal. Once we hit 4-5 weeks, i think i can get more serious about homing them. Anything i cant do myself i will try and get assistance from a rescue.

You can buy the spectra 5in1 shots from a local feed store for a fraction of the price of a vet. Or I heard tractor supply sells them. They also sell the dewormer. It's easy with a small syringe. Find a nurse if you don't want to inject them yourself.

You should list them for sale as Peelers. $1500. Designer mutts are all the rage lately. Look what people are paying for labradoodle, goldendoodle, bernadoodle muts.

So I'm not sure on the pit mix thing. After more research, these white pups look like what a cattle dog looks like at birth with the all white and spots. Will see how they develop to make further guesses on what we think the father was. Their snouts are already starting to lengthen a bit from the flatter looking faces they appeared to have at birth.

The woman that came over this weekend to look at the mom & pups health offered to give them the shots as she is a breeder and does all her own pups herself. $15 or $20 each. That sounds fair and easy, probably the route I'll go.

Thats a bit of a moral conundrum that I am going to have to meditate on a bit. That's a lot of money to ignore. At this point, I just want to keep them all alive

The variety of colors I would lean towards pit father. But give it a few weeks. See how they look. Great markings on the pups and nice variety of colors.

My Moms cattle dog is white with spots. Tough little dogs. She takes on the 98 lb German shepherd with no fear. I think she is 32 lbs. Not sure I have been around a peeler. But it would be a high drive good ranch dog that's for sure.

I applaud you for doing the right thing sir! Its not too late to monitor weights. If you put a different color of string around each pups neck it will be easier to keep track.

how they doing?
Growing like puppies do! Momma is feeding this very minute. Walked in to this situation:

Theyre so stinking cute. Got home to 6 of the 9 outside of the pool today, so its time to line the floor and make the whole closet a puppy pen. They cant get any traction on the tile so i need to grab some more drop cloths Starting yesterday momma will not voluntarily enter the pool to feed. Every single time theyve nursed since yesterday morning ive had to pick her up and place her into the pool and force her to lay down. Once shes down, she does ok, but sometimes i have to force her to stay down or to stop from trying to stimulate them to go to the bathroom as that keeps them from feeding well. They are all pretty much going to the bathroom on their own from what i can tell. She is still making good milk it appears, and overall, everyone seems healthy. Deworming starts next week, as well as weening off of milk and onto puppy mush.

They are getting playful and its fun to watch them jump around and play fight with each other while still having their sea legs under them. Theyre trying to walk, but havent got it down yet. Pretty much everyones eyes are open at this point.

Its been pretty easy so far. Not looking forward to the meal prepping and them playing in poop all day while im at work phase that im about to embark on here in the next week.

Approaching 4 weeks old and everyone is doing good. Teeth are in. We're eating kibble that has been blended in water for almost a week now, going to transition to just soggy kibble now that the teeth have poked through. 4 puppies have been marked for new homes by 3 generous families. It looks like I still have two white males, one brown female, and two black males to find homes for. I have 3 interested families that made contact through facebook when I made the lost & found ad, waiting to hear from all of them if they actually want a pup. The colors on the white ones are changing rapidly with a brown undercoat is starting to appear, as well as brown spots on legs and tails.

Kind of a cool story
What we didnt say was that @DLC and his wife picked out a pup yesterday ;). It just so happened to be the one his wife liked in one of the first batch of photos i posted - the “Back Sleeper”. Beautiful black muzzeled female, the chillest pup of the litter. She just hangs and is so calm and content. So happy they chose to add one to their pack, they seem like fantastic humans and huge animal lovers! She always seems to have her tongue slightly hanging out!

I don’t want to steer away from the greatness of this thread.

Things work out mysteriously…..

The puppies were born on the evening of May 9, I looked at this Thread on May 10 in awe, thinking this is so cool what a Blessing to have this dog pick this human to share her birth with.

We had a vet appointment set up for over 6 weeks to have our Toby checked out. He had a grape fruit sized cancer growth removed from his liver 3 years ago.
We somewhat believed it was back and I wanted the specialist surgeon to have a look again.

Well it was back and Toby passed away on May 12. As with any family member passing, This was a Difficult decision as he had life left in him but he was starting to show signs of discomfort and his high quality of life was just starting to flicker.

Evantwheeler posted pics on May 15 and I saw the Back Sleeper puppy, This started process of bringing me out if my gloomy funk & sadness after loosing My BIg Bad Burrito Bomber - Toby! He was so macho and yet at times wanted to sit on dads lap and get some attention.

I sent Evantwheeler a PM

So fast forward

Friday night
Evantwheeler sends me a txt / pm and I’m in Havasu, I get on the phone with my wife and say hey remember those puppies that adopted that guy….. bla bla bla

Misses DLC meets up with Evantwheeler yesterday, I told my wife if you see one that fits….

Well with out me pointing which One I thought was cool, The Back Sleeper

She choose the Back Sleeper!

Things Work out in Mysterious Ways!

The backsleeper I would bet will be a confident and trusting dog. Would have been my choice as well ( if I was looking)

From finding to healing healers. This whole thread is just awesome.
If i was to keep just 1, it would have been her and thats the god honest truth. Shes like you say, confident trusting and independent. She’ll get out a play with the others, but does so on her terms and isnt at all needy or clingy like some of the others feel. this afternoon she slept through lunch, waited till everyone else passed out, then came and mopped up and filled her belly. No FOMO in this one!

A 5th pup, the white spotted male, has been claimed by a co-workers son & his wife this evening. They have a 4 year old heeler male and want to add to their family. They move into a brand new home at the end of the month here in Menifee, what better way to break it in than with puppy mud all over!?!

Local family that replied to my facebook lost and found ad with a PM offering to adopt if i kept her and the litter are coming over Tuesday to look.

I have a feeling the all black male is going to be the last to go. I think people like the visual contrast of more colorful dogs. That being said, the first born female is big and beautiful and confident still remains unclaimed which really surprises me. Shes super high energy and playful, type A for sure. Fun to watch her play and wrestle everyone. Probably the kind that needs to be an only dog for attention purposes. She always needs/seeks/wants to be the center of the show!

We're past 4 weeks.

I have to say, I question the sanity of anyone who willingly breeds a dog. Everyone should just do as Bob Barker said and get your animal spayed or neutered. I suspect a professional breeder would have a much better setup than I do that allows better control of the mess, but I wouldn't wish puppies on my worst enemy.

2nd round of dewormer was given Tuesday. I noticed one dog right before the dewormer was given had blown a gasket out the rear end and was shooting fluid out the wrong hole. I think there are 3 or 4 dogs now with the water hose butt with the contents looking like wet sand left on the potty pads. The woman helping thinks that its a parasite, so 3 stool samples were dropped off at the Vet this AM and we will know the results tomorrow mid day. She has access to the medication for treatment without seeing a vet, so that will help to save a couple grand in vet and treatment fees, because all 9 need treatment if even one tests positive for parasites. They are still drinking water and nursing, but a couple of them don't want to eat any mush when offered. It may be possible i got them onto the mush too early, or maybe I was over feeding them, or not a consistent enough feeding schedule, or they just got sick from the environment they are in. It really is impossible to keep them out of the mess.... Doing my best to keep things cleaned up, but it is literally a full time job. The last two weeks I've "worked from home", but am getting very little work done. Boss man probably thinks I'm using them as an excuse to get some personal projects done, but unfortunately for me, nothing is getting done other than cleaning. Fortunately I've earned some time off due to all my out of town travels and hours, but this is not how I envisioned spending it.

So far, lessons learned and takeaways;

- Birthing is messy, but its a one time event.
- If the mother makes milk, the first 3 weeks are relatively easy compared to the next 3-5. If she doesn't wholly hell, you're in for a wicked 2 months.
- You need a main area for them to live and a temporary containment to corral them while youre cleaning. I've been bouncing them between the master closet and the garage with a large cage setup. I was throwing them in the master walk-in shower during cleaning, but am going to buy a large plastic tote for this duty moving forward. I can't keep them in the shower because it has a swinging door and when i open to put more in, its a stampede to excape. I need something with top access and tall enough walls they can't climb out.
- Buy stock in latex gloves. I gave up on the gloves early on due to the sheer number I was going through and just washed my hands like I have OCD. Hand have never been so dry, back to buying gloves.
- I was thinking I was out of the woods approaching 4 weeks old and with all dogs eating mush so I started inviting people over to pick their pups as alluded to a couple posts ago. I think that was a mistake from a mental standpoint, just the possibility of them not making it is weighing heavy on my mind with 6 of them claimed for new homes. Should have probably waited until 6 or 8 weeks....

They sure are getting BIG Growing like weeds!
What are they weighing ruffly ?

I think most breeders have a cage / kennel that is raised, So the “ mud 💩 “ drops down to a pan or a try / liner that can get washed out fairly easy.
Having said that…

Your set up looks great! You need a deep plastic tote for a temporary holding pen.

100% turnaround from yesterday. All 3 stool samples came back negative for parasites. One has lingering mud butt, but you can tell there is some substance coming back and he is 1000% more active than he was Wednesday. I was honestly worried he was a gonner, he had no energy to move :( I must have fouled them up with their food somehow, or maybe the dirty little bastards just had upset systems for a day.

Apparently I'm the animal whisperer now? The dogs were freaking out at the gate in the middle of the night last night. Walked out to find this thing lying in the road. It walked away from me, oddly and slowly, but it moved and didn't seem to be in pain. No signs of it being hit. I moved it onto the shoulder of a side road with a flat head shovel. 10 mins later it was lying in the middle of the road again :( I think it was trying to commit suicide.

I fed it some old canned dog food and it literally drank over a quart of water overnight. It is definitely injured somehow, but it will let me pick up and handle it (long sleeves & welding gloves!). Dogs leave it alone now that it's inside the fence, so she has just been chilling. Will continue to feed her and see if she improves. I watched her empty her bladder without trying to get up or move today, another indication to me she is injured.

Meet Kit-Kat, because she's broken in the middle!

could be a bladder infection if you can't see any noticeable injuries. it is the only thing I've noticed that will make cats act lethargic. Also have her checked for worms. hopefully none to be found

Im in no position for another cat, but you had better keep that one! It will love you unconditionally for the rest of its life!!! I have an old guy that looks very similar and I wouldnt trade him for the world even though he tries to sleep on my head every night lol

Apparently I nursed her back to good health. I let her out of her box yesterday AM and she disappeared after laying around in the yard for a bit. A few hours later I found her stalking the pups outside the cage, and I let her be. She wandered off again and I saw her last night around the back of the house. When I tried to grab her to put her in the box to feed and water her, but she hissed at me and ran off. Its the first time I saw her move like a cat. I think she was severely dehydrated, or starving, or both when I found her. It was like her back half was semi-paralyzed, she would almost drag her back legs when she moved when she initially showed up. I will feed her and give her shelter if she stays around, but if she wants to be an asshole she can return to live on the streets and end up a coyote snack or owl chow or hit by a car.

On the puppy front, I have 6 dogs remaining in my possession. I've decided to hold onto two of them for a bit longer than the others, the brown female and black male in the right of the pic above (River & Barrett). The brown female on the left (Soda - not my naming!) and the black male with white chest in the middle (Bandit) have homes but the owners want to wait until 6 weeks or later to take them. The white male in the middle (London) does not yet have a home.

Mr. & Mrs. DLC have had their pup since Saturday afternoon, and my neighbor and his wife picked their two up Saturday night. Neighbor is actually an RDP member too, but isn't active. I had name the white male Dave (2nd born pup after River) and the black female runt Lilly, but they renamed them Buster & Bonnie. It will be cool to be able to see them grow up as they're just two houses down from me.

We have yet to name our little bundle of joy!

Ive been out working on a bathroom remodel at the hava house and just got to actually see her and hold her last night….

She is so amazing!
She sleeps and then eats, 💩’s, pee’s and plays ! Then sleeps again!

She woke me up last night about 2:15 am for a trio of P’s and some grub !
