Need to buy a 24,000 BTU mini split for my Vegas garage. Any opinions on decent units. I have an AC and electrician so just need the unit. Garage has 10' ceilings, 3 car unit 18' deep.

Do these units need a drain outside ?

I also see the ground unit in LuckyStrikes post - do they need that also?

The indoor unit is basically the air handler/evaporator and will need a drain as condensation will be present when running. The outside unit is the condenser (compressor) and yes it is needed.

You will need 220 volts to get that size of a unit. You should get a “heat pump” if you want it to give out heat in the winter. We have a 12,000 BTU unit in our casita. It keeps it cold in the summer and warm in the winter.

I think Mini-splits are great! You just need to size it right.

Getting 220 V is no problem I have all the energy for probably three houses the latest an LG panels with inverters. I power three pool pumps and two are conditioners and the bill stays at $13.21 per month.

Yes....all AC units have an evaporator coil and will produce condensation which needs to be drained.

If its similar to RDs garage he has 2 2.5 ton units in his garage If I recall Correctly.

Mini splits are all over the place and the fact that they can be bought online gives people unrealistic expectations as to cost.
you can buy a wall mount air handler and outdoor unit with a small line set for $1200-1500 ish pretty much everywhere. our pricing on the equipment side is pretty much right in line there as well. what start driving the costs are, running electrical, labor to install, the tools required to do start up, etc.

We get requests all the time from people who bought a cheap unit online and want us to come and "just hook it up". they loose their minds when they get our quote to install and start up the unit. normally it will exceed the total cost we quoted them to provide and install a higher quality system. Most contractors I know will not install customer provided equipment due to the liability side of things, we don't want to deal with the warranty side of things, nor do we want to deal with the issues when the cheapo unit takes a crap and somehow its now our responsibility to deal with warranty, repairs, etc...

Exactly, if you already have a good AC guy that you use regularly and trust, have him get you the unit he recommends, and is familiar with install and service/warranty.

I did Fujitsus when i did mine, because both of my buddies in the AC biz have installed hundreds of them and that's what they recommended. They have been great units.

We installed a Daiken a few months ago in one of our darkrooms. The installer recommended it and it was less expensive than LG etc. We only need it to last a year as we will be replacing that room in a new building, but it works so well, maybe I will take it home when we demo that room.

Mini splits are heat pumps. They are much more efficient than a typical heat pump. If you live in a cold climate mini splits will operate at below zero temps where as a typical heat pump losses efficiency well before that.

A mini split rivals a ground source heatpump in efficiency at a fraction of the cost.

I have a 2 ton in the back and a 2.5 ton in the middle / front.. my garage isn’t insulated as I come to find out years later.

I plan on rectify’ing that shortly.

That said my two minisplits have no problems keeping my 1700 Swift garage in the low 70’s no problem and will put it in the 60’s on demand.

I just got home and they are running.. it’s colder out there than it is in the house and costs about 125-150.00 a month to keep it like that.

About 4.00 - 5.00 a day to AC the garage

The cheap ones are what they are, Cheap. Plan on replacing them every couple of years. Get a Daikin or Mitsubishi and it will last longer

We’ve got a Fujitsu mini-split that’s been running pretty much 24/7, 6 months a year, for 15 years now. No problem, except having the drain line blown clean every 2 or 3 years. You can clean the filter yourself with a garden hose.

As a consumer and former builder, I agree 100%. I would never buy a cheap unit on the Internet and then ask a quality HVAC company to install it. Are all the parts there? Does the air handler for the inside match the outdoor unit, or do we need parts.

Get a good HVAC company to do the whole process, don’t go cheap, our split unit has been running great, 24/7 in the summer, for 15 years.

There are cooling only mini splits. Not all of them are heat pumps.

Right. Trying to say that. If you ever want heat, get a heat pump. Run an air conditioner in reverse, it gives heat.

Excuse my ignorance here, but can these be hooked up to a nest or something so I can have my garage cooled by the time I get in town?

Building a house next year so trying to get everything on my list.

We have three in the garage and one in our bedroom, Mitsubishi’s. Leave the garage at 80 all summer. Electric bill barely changes from when they are not on.

Honeywell makes a wifi thermostat for mini splits. Plus most of the larger manufacturers make WiFi adapters.

The LG's have their own app and can be controlled on your phone.

My garage in Scottsdale is about 1100 sqft. Was looking at a mini split system. 3 ton. The garage is all sealed up and insulated. I have a propane tank on the RV side so I dont think I can install anything on that side. Luckily I have an available 220V lead and circuit since I abandoned the electric cook top for a gas unit during a recent remodel.

Have any of you seen the separate coil/Registers?

I've got to do something. It's ridiculously hot in the garage and it's killing my productivity.

As a side note, you guys in hot areas need to get solar this year. Last year of solar tax credit at 30%. NV Energy gave me a 6% rebate check, then IRS tax credit at $10,700. No brainer as long as you own, do not lease. My electricity is basically free, just a $13.21 monthly basic charge.

It's pretty much accepted that the tax credit is going to be renewed. I'll be shocked if it does not, a very popular program.

Appreciate the intro, but its not going to 0% immediately, though next year it ratchets down to 26% next year, and continues dropping for a few more years. Basically we have the credit through the remainder of Trump's first term. I wish I was as sure as Sleek Jet re: its continuation, but who knows. In my service area its not a huge part of the discussion any more, more like the final carrot in the deal. Most of the rest of the country who has relatively cheap power still relies on the tax credit to make the deal.

That said I'd rather have 4 more years than the tax credit renewed.

If you have considered solar, now is the time to gaurantee the peak return, however if you plan to wait until November to call a reputable installer and think it gets done this year, good luck. For instance, while my regular queue is something like 6 weeks for a simple install (No panel change, no roofing, solar only in friendly jurisdiction) my commercial queue and those with addtional issues is already approaching year end. There are crap installers who will tell you anything you want to hear, and then there are those who will be honest. Stop riding the fence and save money as soon as possible if you live in California and you have a bill that averages anywhere near 200, solar is your answer. Just remember what BoatPi said, own not lease.

Now back to mini splits, still need one replaced in Havasu.

I know a guy that will install whatever you want. I bought mine online, with him making sure I got all the correct stuff. He works as a A/C repair guy for one of the biggest in havasu. Let me know if you want his info.

Who did you use for your home in NV? What brands? Anything you wish you added or didn’t need with your setup?
