I traded the cad and some cash for it.....the cad broke down again and I was gonna part it out....hated that MF"r.....all I want is something to leave at havasu to ride around... thought this with 4x4 would be good for desert bar trips and mall runs...

I thought I sold my ram eco diesel to Anderson Toyota.... but looks like that fell apart.... so now all my junk will be blue;)

I've always kinda liked the looks of the Nitro. I have no idea about durability or offroad capability. I do agree though, a small loft and larger tires would damn near be a necessity for any off roading in that thing.

I think you are confussing a 4x4 with All Wheel Drive in terms of capability. That is a SUV with all wheel drive... not set up to "Off Road" per se. It's a dodge, so from past experience I'd expect the engine and drive train to outlast all other parts on the vehicle.

Would think it would be fun to drive around for a bit but not necessarily my style.:thumbsup

The nitro uses an NV 143 t case. Has 2 high and 4 high but no low or neutral options. It's basically the lower end liberty "command trac"

My grandparents had a nitro, 2010 I think. Was a 4.0. They loved it (my grandpa had a bunch of rubicon/scramblers/etc that he rock crawled). It was their primary driver.

At about 50k it started making noise, sounded like a lifter. It ended up having a rocker perch or something strip, rocker came off, bounced around in there and broke part of the head casting.

Long story short, after lots of arguing and months at the dealer, they left it there and took home another Cherokee.

Other than that, they loved it and would still own it if our local dodge dealer didn't suck.

as long as they have been out, we have never worked on one.... lots of libertys though...maybe they all blow up before they run out of warranty

aren't they 100k warranty?

I fixed up a 4x4 suburban.... dealer ships keep hounding me to buy my eco ram... guess there aren't any and they have buyers waiting.... they wanna make 10k on the sell so I keep backing up...it kinda bothers me that I owned the truck 14 mo. and it has 3400 miles....who cares what the mpg is if you don't drive 100 miles a mo.

the truck stickers for over 50k.... all I want is 32..they said ok, bring it down... car max in vegas said 33k..3 mo. ago.... but ... I heard that the book has been going up each change

This thread is about your Nitro 4 x 4 and my comment was it was not 4 x 4 in the sense of a true Off Road vehicle's capability. My brother in laws BMW is a 4 x 4 in the same since of the terms we are talking here. Given the big rims, thin sidewall tires, side steps, and front plastic air dam under the bumper, I'd say just about everything self propelled except your diesel pusher would out perform it off road. Knock your self out on the trails with it if you must:thumbsup.

I didn't realize the Liberty was RWD with a part time transfer case, or at least had the option. I'd like an XJ Cherokee but the ones around here are rusted out shit boxes

2009 Dodge Nitro: What's New
Find a Car
Dodge
Nitro
2009

By Cars.com Editors
September 1, 2008
Vehicle Overview

The Nitro, which is related to the Jeep Liberty, features Dodge's distinctive crosshair grille and comes in base SE, midlevel SLT and high-performance R/T versions. Nitro competitors include the Nissa Xterra and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

New for 2009

The Doge Nitro no longer has a manual transmission option. The brakes and suspension have been retuned in an effort to improve ride and handling performance.

Exterior

Stylists apparently were aiming at a burly image for this SUV, as the wheels, grille, hood and even door handles appear almost one size too large for the rest of the body. Sharp, angular lines give the vehicle a muscular, chiseled look.

While the Liberty and Nitro share some common underpinnings, Chrysler made the Nitro longer and wider to distinguish the pair. The Nitro comes in at 178.9 inches long and 73.1 inches wide. This is about the same as the Xterra, while the Grand Vitara (176 inches long and 71.3 inches wide) is smaller.

16-inch steel wheels (SE)
16-inch aluminum wheels (optional on SE)
17-inch aluminum wheels (SLT)
20-inch aluminum chrome-clad wheels (R/T)
Standard body-colored bumpers, moldings and (optional on the SE) fenders
Standard power foldaway mirrors (standard heated mirrors on SLT and R/T)
Optional sunroof

Interior

The Nitro seats five in two rows, and brushed-metal-look accents are used on the gearshift, door handles, climate controls and center console. The fold-flat rear bench is accompanied by a standard fold-flat front passenger seat. The second-row seats also recline for added passenger comfort. The Load N' Go cargo floor (standard on the SLT and R/T) slides out 18 inches to help load and unload packages. The sliding cargo floor can hold 400 pounds and is made of heavy-duty plastic for easy cleaning. A reversible load floor is standard on SE models, and a compact utility table is optional.

The Nitro has 32.1 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear. With the backseat folded down that space increases to 65.2 cubic feet; this is nearly equal to the Xterra, but smaller than the Grand Vitara (68.9 cubic feet).

Available cloth, stain-resistant cloth and leather upholstery
Standard floormats and 12-volt power outlet
Standard leather-wrapped steering wheel (standard on SLT and R/T)
Optional rear entertainment system with gaming system and wireless headphones
Optional hands-free communication system and remote start
Optional voice-activated navigation and audio system (including touch-screen, voice commands, 30GB hard drive and navigation radio)

Under the Hood

Dodge offers a choice of engines and transmissions on the Nitro. There are two V-6s and two automatic transmissions offered (a manual transmission is no longer available). The suspension has an independent design up front and a five-link, solid-axle rear arrangement. As a performance driver would expect, the R/T version features firmer springs, shocks and other items to improve its cornering and traction. The Nitro can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

For 2009, the Nitro's larger V-6 gets a retuned exhaust note, and all Nitros get a stiffer rear axle shaft. The shocks, springs, anti-roll bars and steering have all been retuned, offering (along with the stiffer axle) an improved ride, Dodge says.

210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with 235 pounds-feet of torque (SE and SLT)
260-hp, 4.0-liter V-6 with 265 pounds-feet of torque (R/T)
Four-speed automatic transmission (SE and SLT)
Five-speed automatic transmission (R/T)
Rear- or part-time four-wheel drive
Trailer tow package with heavy-duty engine cooling, power-steering cooler, receiver hitch and connector, and full-size spare tire

Safety

Safety features include:

Standard dual-stage front airbags
Standard side curtain airbags
Standard antilock braking system
Standard traction control
Standard electronic stability system with rollover mitigation
Standard smart key that immobilizes the engine in a theft attempt
Optional parking assist that consists of a sonar-based warning system with audible and visual alerts

Your missing the big picture. I told you long ago that eco was garbage if you would listen to some board members you could save lots of money. I'll sit back and watch give it a week and it will be for sale.

as long as they have been out, we have never worked on one.... lots of libertys though...maybe they all blow up before they run out of warranty

aren't they 100k warranty?

I think the one my grandparents had was one of those lifetime warranty deals? Like I said, she would still be driving it if our dodge dealer didn't suck and take months to try and fix it. Hers was the R/T version too.

A friends wife has one too, they love it. Zero issues. They use it a lot up in the snow.

I think they look kinda cool...

Autoweek magazine rolled one in the parking lot at California Speedway doing a slalom test. Dodge changed/lowered the suspension after that.
