Some friends and I headed up to the Pismo Dunes for the weekend. Overall had a great time, it's always fun to camp on the beach and hang out and have a camp fire. I have grown up camping and riding in Pismo so we were a bit shocked at the type of people that have suddenly taken over. The dunes continue to get smaller and smaller as the tree huggers continue to take more of the area away from the riding enthusiast. I am not sure if they close more of the dunes down because of true environmental issues or maybe its because of the lack of respect people have for the place and the fact that they leave trash everywhere and don't pick up after themselves.
The change- The type of people, its kinda like Latino central now...It has become the Gorman of the central coast. We were shocked to see more Mexican and Portuguese flags than anything. We arrived on Thursday afternoon around 1:30 and it was packed. I know most people are out for summer time with their kids and are maybe vacationing but it was nearly impossible to find a spot on the beach. We ended up finding a big enough spot for 3 trailer at the end of the beach pole 7 but it was short lived and wasn't before too long that we were overtaken by the Mexican mafia. In all of the years prior, I don't ever remember having this many cars on the beach, I always thought the rangers limited the amount of day passes available. But now maybe because the state of California is so broke and the revenue is needed it seems like they let everybody and their brother and cousins on the beach which make it hard to find a spot. Also in years past I remember this thing called "respect" where you gave your neighbor you were camping next to more than enough room and weren?t literally right on top of him. Unfortunately now, you need to stake your beach real estate with caution tape or they will slowly encroach.
I am all for hanging out and having a good time drinking and listening to music but also respecting people around you. When we would leave to go on buggy rides we would come back only to see our caution tape and markers moved and more cars parking closer and closer to our trailers. At one point, one of the families was actually teaching their son how to ride a dirt bike in the and in between our trailer and their cars. There were probably only a couple of feet in between, no room and no common sense. And when you ask them to park somewhere else or to teach the kid somewhere else, or to turn down their mariachi music they look at you like you're the idiot. I don't know, maybe it?s the breed but it was crazy and kinda discouraging. As I said overall we had a good time but probably wont be heading back anytime in the near future.
Here are a few crappy I Phone pictures of the beach camping and also Comp Hill...
