Some friends and I headed up to the Pismo Dunes for the weekend. Overall had a great time, it's always fun to camp on the beach and hang out and have a camp fire. I have grown up camping and riding in Pismo so we were a bit shocked at the type of people that have suddenly taken over. The dunes continue to get smaller and smaller as the tree huggers continue to take more of the area away from the riding enthusiast. I am not sure if they close more of the dunes down because of true environmental issues or maybe its because of the lack of respect people have for the place and the fact that they leave trash everywhere and don't pick up after themselves.

The change- The type of people, its kinda like Latino central now...It has become the Gorman of the central coast. We were shocked to see more Mexican and Portuguese flags than anything. We arrived on Thursday afternoon around 1:30 and it was packed. I know most people are out for summer time with their kids and are maybe vacationing but it was nearly impossible to find a spot on the beach. We ended up finding a big enough spot for 3 trailer at the end of the beach pole 7 but it was short lived and wasn't before too long that we were overtaken by the Mexican mafia. In all of the years prior, I don't ever remember having this many cars on the beach, I always thought the rangers limited the amount of day passes available. But now maybe because the state of California is so broke and the revenue is needed it seems like they let everybody and their brother and cousins on the beach which make it hard to find a spot. Also in years past I remember this thing called "respect" where you gave your neighbor you were camping next to more than enough room and weren?t literally right on top of him. Unfortunately now, you need to stake your beach real estate with caution tape or they will slowly encroach.

I am all for hanging out and having a good time drinking and listening to music but also respecting people around you. When we would leave to go on buggy rides we would come back only to see our caution tape and markers moved and more cars parking closer and closer to our trailers. At one point, one of the families was actually teaching their son how to ride a dirt bike in the and in between our trailer and their cars. There were probably only a couple of feet in between, no room and no common sense. And when you ask them to park somewhere else or to teach the kid somewhere else, or to turn down their mariachi music they look at you like you're the idiot. I don't know, maybe it?s the breed but it was crazy and kinda discouraging. As I said overall we had a good time but probably wont be heading back anytime in the near future.

Here are a few crappy I Phone pictures of the beach camping and also Comp Hill...

We gave up Pismo about 5 years ago.
Used to be great at one time.

Best time to go is when school is in session and mid week.
Around 4 PM however, the drunks hit the dunes in their street vehicles.
It was $5 back then and plenty of drunks creating chaos.

We do an Oregon Dunes run every other year instead.
Much nicer situation and dunes.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Utah is definitely worth a visit. Not the best "dunes", but nobody around & incredible scenery.

All the portuguese and Hispanic from central valley beat feet to the coast on the weekends when it is uniformly hot in the summer. Time to go is after school is back in session or mid winter it is beautiful plus. More beach is open when the plovers are not there

We have not been in 3 years. I miss it but don't miss the hassle.

Years ago you used to need talent to make pismo happen. The creek to cross, tides to negotiate so you could get all the way down to marker 20 and camp by yourself.

Those are bygone days.

We went last year. A zoo. Didn't even bother with camping. I just took the quads on a trailer and stayed in a condo nearby. At least we got some sleep.

Dunes are all lumpy and tracked up. The area is stupidly small for the amount of people around.

Used to go there fairly regularly in the late 80's earlier 90's, at the time my son lived with his mother in Santa Maria so Pismo was a natural choice.
It was great back then, and being we'd pick him up at random times due to a year round schedule the place was never very crowded. We he moved down to live with us we stopped going.
Couple years ago drove through there and decided to get the day pass and just drive up/down the beach(mid-summer)....I couldn't believe how congested and crowded it was, I think theres less traffic Fridays on I-5 . Didn't look very appealing anymore. I was near Lake Lopez last weekend and drove towards Oceano for gas before the drive home, massive amounts of toybox rigs leaving town.
.
I also understand they don't allow clamming anymore either.:grumble:

This is no bull.

1997,first trip to Pismo.
Made it in at low tide no issue. We had friends show up late(high tide)
My wife insisted we cross to see them and bring them back.I told her it was against my better judgement to cross, several times. Also said it wouldn't do any good,we wouldn't be able to drag their mo-ho across. She went all bock bock bock on me,and I said ok,you must know better than me:rolleyes: lets do this.
As the first wave crashed over the hood of my 4x4 F350 and the engine sucked up sea water and died,I looked over and said "are you fuckin happy now?" As the second wave hit the side of the dead truck and we felt the truck move towards the beach a little, then sucked out to sea a little more, she sank down into the seat.

To break it down,

Pre trip expenses, new brakes and 7 new tires,$1700

Cost to be pulled out of the creek,$140

Cost to have the truck towed to Santa Maria Lincoln/Mercury,free via buddies AAA

Cost of front/rear dif flush,transfer case flush,trans flush,fluids,another brake rebuild,and a new long block,installed,$4700

Having your wife Never question your better judgement? Priceless:cool:

I second this,a great place.
Also,a little farther drive,White Wash dunes just south of GreenRiver,Utah.Little dunes, washes,no people.Saw one leo the whole time, was there to airlift an injured rider.Another plus,if your into mountain biking, they have the big round rocks and bike trails much like Moab.

x2 That thing is bad ass.

Never been to Pismo. Always wanted to check it out. However I hate mariachi music and re-fried beans.

So how is camping there. My truck is 2wd and I don't want to get stuck pulling my trailer. Are there good hard spots to camp like Glamis? All the pictures I see are people way out in the soft stuff.

I use "Crime Scene" tape. When people ask is this an actual crime scene I just say "Not Yet", drool a little, and limp away.:p

Thanks its a good time!

Its cool to be able to camp right on the beach but with a 2wd truck towing a trailer, plan on struggling a bit.

Its Monday and your overly sensitive? Let me guess your one of the encroacher?

I thought I was clear when I said "I am all for hanging out and having a good time drinking and listening to music but also respecting people around you" So really why should I have to go somewhere else. Mexicans seem to demand a little respect, I guess its to much for them to respect others?

We used to be hard core glamis people,
one year we made 21 trips during the dune season, but like pismo, glamis is becoming more and more of the same. Overcrowding, tore up dunes, Leo's all
over, human pieces of shit (of all colors).

We sold all of our stuff 4 years ago and bought a home in Havasu. Best thing we ever did. Year round fun, and I know who my neighbors are.

I love glamis and tearing up the dunes on a run, but it just got to be more and more bullshit and less and less fun.

Do you really wanna get your trailer queen dirty? :p

Nothing like Glamis at all. The whole place will fit in one wash.

They might as well just close the place. :(

Last trip I had to Glamis we had a Mexican group about 1/4 mile away.......their sound system could be heard 5 miles away. I'm not against um-pah-pah music but sheesh, it was way too loud and well past 3am before it turned down:skull

Maybe over sensative cause it monday:D but not one of the encroachers.

As far as respect I am all for it and it goes both ways, but putting up caution tape around your camp ground is not "demanding" respect in a sence as you say mexicans do? My respect is earned not given. But it does go both ways also.

You forgot the 661 for SCV/Lancaster/Palmdale.

I work in O.C. and see a lot of "bro's with their rolled up brim hats, so cal jerseys, yada yada yada".

Oh yeah, and 2wd lifted trucks. ;)

Seems a little hypocritical to me to flame away then back it up with same nonsense.

002 - YouTube

Very Cool :thumbsup

Your video shows it a bit, it's just not all sandy dunes. We went with bikes / paddles, like we go to glamis. But, the terrain varies from sand to a little dirt, a few rocks & tree roots. You can chew up a paddle in no time, think I'll use a knobby when we go back someday. That aside, awesome experience :thumbsup.

Let me be more clear, I bought the caution tape from a vendor on the beach since apparently this is the new thing to do out there to "mark your territory" I had never seen this before and after seeing how our camp was being invaded it made sense. And to be more clear everyone (all races) were doing this. I am used to the old days of Pismo where you don't camp right on top of each other and give your neighbor a little breathing room but as stated those days are long gone. Apparently that breed doesnt know much about personal space and invading it.

There's trash of every race. That was my point. Quit hating on my truck! :D

BTW- Of course you see them in the OC! You know what they say: "When it's 100 in the IE, its 909 at the beach"

Last trip to Pismo, was late July/early August. The Portagese flag was everywhere.
The second night there the music went on till the early morning hours. At 0600 my raptor fired off,the SuperTrapp on it is anything but quiet. Some one from that loud Portagese camp came over saying he wasn't too happy with my noise so early and was thinking about reporting me to the ranger dude.I responded I wasn't crazy about the loud music till the early mornings and was thinking of talking to the same ranger about the noise and all the glass beer bottles I see in their camp.
The guy looked down to the ground a sec and said "point taken man,I won't if you dont"
later that day he came back and invited us to his family BBQ.I asked about all the flags. He said it's kind of a cultural get together/family reunion/vacation they do about that time of year, every year. They were actually pretty cool people.
None of them encroached onto our little piece of sand. The only one's that did were rolling a flamed out Chevy with an HB sticker in the window,he was a piece of trash, only there 2 days, and left trash everywhere and burned palletts full of nails.:thumbsdown

Douchebags come in all colors, respecting your fellow human is becoming a rare trait in a person. I can always tell if I am going to like someone in the first 30 seconds I meet them, how they talk, act and treat the people, animals and environment around them.

I'm an equal opportunity hater, I give everyone the equal chance for me to hate them. :thumbsup

I can totally see the caution tape thing, who really cares. My only thing is the "Breed" you like to refer to as. If someone is acting like assholes ...then call them assholes. When start refering to races of people as "Breeds" you sound like a racist asshole. Not saying that you are but....if you want to lump people together?

I ride too and I actually totally understand what you mean by people camping right on top of you and agree with what you are saying in that regaurds. I have had that done to me and it sucks. Come to think of it.....I think they might have been mexican too!:D oh shit maybe it is the mexicans!! Thats why I always say I am Hispanic! That is after I say American!

People say things for a reason and usually its because its true, not necessarily because they are racist.

I camped on the beach at Playa Mal Paso a few times. This is on the sand between Rosarito and Ensenada. A couple gringo families and ours. We showed up on a Thursday afternoon. Paid our $6.00 per night and set up our camp.

We parked at the edge of the dirt lot, right where the sand started. We had a few tents, a couple eazy ups, a pop up tent trailer, and my overcab camper.

Thursday we could see two other camps on the whole beach. Friday, maybe a couple dozen. But it musta been some sort of Mexican holiday, cuz night Friday, and all day Saturday about a zillion Mexican families showed up. They packed the beach all around us. They were packed in on each other like sardines. But since we had set up before anyone else arrived, we had pretty much taken a lot of space. A couple of them looked at crowding us, but none did.

It was noisy and every camp had there own damn stereo going at full blast, but everyone was polite and well behaved.

I think Mexicans in Mexico are way better mannered than the vato Raider fans you run into at Pismo.

Been a couple years since i have been to pismo. That place seems to be a jinx for my buggy.Last i went was 2010 i had my throttle get stuck pushed in clutch to keep from accelrating let it out fast as it revved in 3rd gear there went my f/w.Luckily it only bent the dowel pins a wedgemate saved my 82mm crank. The year before we went last minute to beat the so cal heat and humidity at the time was nice to sit outside in mid to high overcast 50s with little wind. about the only time car drove into the trailer.

Pismos small and crowded but i cant afford to take time off or pay for summer dune trips to cool climates. So it is what it is.I normally dont bother finding spots on the beach but like to camp near a runway so i can watch the central valley boys in their lifted diesels on 40s try and pull each other out cause they all got stuck and didnt air down so bubba 2 brings his truck in and tries to tug bubba 1 only to bury it then try and power out all on 50 psi in the tires.LOL we had signs saying last guy made it to hear and kept moving them

The problem with Pismo is they close half the beach to camping to let the Plover (bird) fornicate.

So all those people are cramed together in the first half of the beach

When we go in the winter when the whole beach is open to camping and the same number of people can spread out its much nicer.

And everyone there puts the yellow caution tape up. It must be SOP now

mid-week, winter, with school in session is the only time to go. some mornings all the tracks are drifted over with fresh sand.

if you cherry-pick your days the temperature isn't much different either.

I've been there in January when it's 70 degrees on the beach and.....and June when it's 60. :headscratch:

Way back when I would take our quads as well as the jetski.....go surf and jump the waves then go fly in the dunes, then go jetski, then ride quads...etc. Those were the good ol' days:thumbsup
