What does going 94 have to do with being the definitive factor in the choice between I/o and outboard?

It would seem to me there are a lot of other considerations besides just top speed.

I like outboards AND I/O’s.

They each have their own place.

Possibly a better title for this thread would be - “27 speedster goes 94 mph w Merc 450”

How much I/O hp to go 94 in a speedster?

Who thought this was even still a question? HP to HP the outboard is always faster.

But it’s not a V8…oh wait😂

I was talking to Jake at the open house and guessed 88MPH which is exactly what it ran off the trailer. Im sure whatever prop they used to run 94 will not be the same prop they are using loaded down in the summer but it is still cool to have a 94MPH recall on the GPS.

Interior space, fuel economy, speed. I/0s don’t hold a candle to OBs anymore. We just need Mercury to offer a real exhaust cut out because the 360 Apex’s and the 300’s with the aftermarket ones sound amazing.

Might as well add the Worlds Fastest Jet Boat, "Spirit of Australia" to the mix. Clocked in at an estimated speed of 344 mph but that's just an estimate...

If it’s a legit 80-82 mph boat it’s still a home run

9000hp at 344 mph is 26 HP per MPH

450hp at 94mph is 5 HP per MPH

😉🤣

Damn jet boats

Tell me they’re going to add two more motors?

Not “always” but usually

Sure there are random outliers... but I can’t think of a single instance between 300-900 HP where an outboard hasn’t been a faster configuration.

4 stroke outboards seem to run like an I/O with 150-200 more HP.

Nailed it. Takes a lot more power to get those numbers out of an I.O. for sure. I think a 600SCI +

This boat is a super light layup from what I read.

Personally I don't like it. I think that the single outboard on it looks funny.

This is accurate
26 Ultra Deck
496HO = low to mid 70’s
525 = mid 80’s
600 = low 90’s

Been in all 3 and those are legit numbers

Fixed it for you. Cause you aint getting that kind of speed out of a Yamaha apples to apples.

I think if you put a 300 HP Yamaha on the back of a 23’ “west coast” boat, it would still run like a 8.2HO/496 HO in the same boat.

A magic deck boat is/would be a different story.

@hallett21 how would that huge boat do loaded with your family full of gas? Seems like it will struggle to get out of the water with 5 adults gas and coolers.

I bet propped for 82-84 mph top end you’d do just fine.

Being an outboard you’re going to rev it to get on plane for sure. But you won’t be worrying about ruining a drive like an I/O.

Mercury has had prop shaft issues but the only ones I’ve heard of are large cleavers running 110-120+ mph.

Maybe but id only buy a 27 speedster with twin outboards for maneuverability, i have a prop on my 25 that will run 110 with 860 hp. But its horrible for anything but top speed. My go to prop for regular cruising runs about 104-105. It does everything well. Idle. Good mid range cruise rpm and decent top speed. Loaded down with people, coolers and supplies.

Being able to not only trim and tilt, but lower and lift is a powerful set of tools in the search for speed.

Did they run a cleaver on that?
Yup. And if there was a system where you could inpedantly control the X axis (in and out) without touching the Y or Z you could have a damn near infinite swt-up.

Same thought, for the price of a single 450 twin 300s would be my choice. After docking a 27 with twins there is no going back lol. Nothing against this 27 however, I love to see new ideas come to life.

I have owned both…..27 IO and 27 OB’s. Anyone wanna know the answer? Lol

For a 27 IO you would need over 700 hp to get to 94 MPH. So take a 600 sci and turn it up.

If I had to do it again I would go boosted and go at least 750 hp. That would go consistently 95 mph in real world conditions. (Heat, full cooler of RD’s beer, kids, dogs, etc)

650 HP just doesn’t get it done. Ask me how I know

So that 94 mph with a 450 is pretty damn good

When they can make a 450R sound like a TCM 1050 EFI , I am all in.
Sounds like a jet, that's what I'd tell myself. Anything above 90 is fast as hell, I'd be all over this vs going 75 for the same price (assuming same price)

I may or may not have been the one who rigged this boat and the test driver for this boat:cool:

But if I we a betting man… I’d say it was probably done at Lake Elsinore with not much room to hang it out for many miles, 50+ gallons of gas, 2 people, no special cleaver prop, Max5, and it probably ran out of lake for the last RPM’s…

That’s what I’d guess.

Bad ass boat for sure!

I’m far from an expert but seems that that advantage is greater than any weight savings. HP is HP. Being able to apply it at an optimal angle is a big advantage out of the hole and huge at top end.
