One of my friends had a heart attack the other day, he's 39. He is overweight, eats lots of fast food, smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and avoids strenuous activities as much as possible. They put in a stint and he's gonna live, but the whole thing was quite a surprise, well for him anyways.

Turns out now he wants to live but will have to make some serious changes to accomplish that.

Sounds like my boss except for the overweight part. Mid 40's. Had a stroke on 5-08-13. Hasn't had a smoke since. Still drinks some on the weekend. But changed his diet also.

A guy I worked with had a heart attack a number of years back when he was 35. 35!!!!!!!!

We used to hang out and hit up some bars after work and an occasional baseball game.

He smoked, drank, and ate like complete shit. He was on light duty for a while and moved to Tucson to continue working. After a few years, he came back to Orange. He was only back for about a year before he went back on disability for some other medical reason. I haven't heard from him for a couple of years ... so I don't know how he is doing.

One of my neighbor died last week. He was only 47. He was a heavy smoker but wasn't overweight. He was still alive in the ambulance with a stint but died in the hospital.
Hopefully it was just a wake up call for your friend and he'll stop smoking, get into shape.

Smoking is the worst thing for the cardiovascular system. Everybody worries about the lung cancer potential, but it'll fuck up your pump and plumbing more often than not.

My point being, this is way to young to have serious health issues that are purely self inflicted.

From what I hear being dead is pretty permanant, no reason to speed things along:D

I'll be 35 this year, had a minor heart attack in 2010....yep 30! Just had some blood work done and Dr ordered another stress test, today! Apparently results weren't good. I've never smoked, and don't eat horrible. Apparently what I do, is make excuses to not eat better and exercise more. With 2 kids under 3 I think it's time I get serious.

My first open heart surgery was when I was 40.

Abusing your body is not good, but more important than anything is genes.

You would be thinking of my pops who you met a couple years back at DS street fair.

Genes are my main problem. My LDL was over 300 today

I start my new active life tomorrow with a 4 day hike in the eastern sierras...if there's not too much snow ;) alternative trip is Telescope Peak in death valley.

I had a heart attack at 45. I dont drink, smoke and ate fairly well. My issue was most likely my steroid abuse back when I was about 32.
Plus genetics on my Mothers side. My uncle died when he was 39 of a heart attack and other family members died in their 40's

My father had a huge heart attack at 39. Overweight, smoking, stress, heavy drinking every weekend religiously. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 56. Im trying to get my ass in shape, never been a heavy drinker, and have never smoked, but I am overweight. Gotta keep at it, I have two kids under 3 and they need me around for a long time....
-Plus, I want to be the Dad that can do things like go to the river, etc, when my kids are older and I am a grandpa. Hopefully I am blessed to make it that far, cause there are alot of things working against our longevity my friends!

My childhood best friend died of a heart attack at age 30. He was an exercise/strength buff, but had a hidden heart defect that was not discovered until, well, it killed him. So you never really know.

I'll say this too - how many best friends do you have in life? I'm nearly 50 now, and have yet to find another friend like that, you know, a friend that no matter how deep the shiat is, he has your back, no questions asked. So hold onto your friends, too.

Honestly, I see both sides of the argument.

Being diabetic, my Dr's are always very concerned with coronary disease. Had a little blip on a recent stress test, so to be safe they ordered an Angiogram. Not that big of a procedure, Dr's were very happy, all arteries were clear and no stints needed. Since they went in through the groin, it felt like I was kicked in the nuts for a few days.

You can increase your overall long term quality of life and well being by taking a proactive approach to a more healthy lifestyle. If you look at life insurance premiums and the way the stats are applied it's a real eye opener. Fat people don't wrinkle, but they also don't live long, it's a trade off I guess ;)

Lets see.

My maternal Grandparents are 93 and 91.
He smoked cigs, then cigars, then pipe until 70 or so.

Paternal grandma died last year...93.

Dad went at 68 from prostate.

Mom is 73, massivley overweight and never any heart problems.

Comparatively, I am in pretty good shape except overweight by about 40 pounds...which I am working on.

Certainly being health conscious is a must to have an honest shot, but it isn't a guarantee.

When Deb got diagnosed (BC) last year we quit smoking and have changed our eating habits to a degree...her more than me but it is always on my mind when I order out.
Salads, chicken or fish more often than not, but I still get a steak or ribs now and then..and a gut burger if on the road.

Even though he did all the wrong things it is very unusual to have a heart attack at this age. I wonder if he has a family history?? Lets home he is ok and get on track with a few healthy lifestyles. Stop Smoking!!!

I want in on this bet...

You guys ski doubles. First guy that falls (or...can't get up) looses.

All we need is a neutral party to supply the boat. :skull

I would supply the boat, but I'm thinking we'll need 800+hp to get them both up. I'm out:D

By the way, if anyone in your family had a heart attack, you need to see a doctor. Most of these heart attacks don't happen without small warning.

The thread hits home with a good friend.

"Rich" is one of my mentors, a legend on our dept. 6'7", 300lbs., was still benching 350 lbs. at 53, but has diabetes issues, had been known to partake in martinis (sugar=bad), over time.

He was walking near beach in LB Monday, told his wife he had pain in his chest, walked 30 yards to car, and fell flat, out cold. Wife of 35 years jumped on him, started doing compressions.

Another passerby stopped by, said she had just renewed her CPR, and joined in . The ER docs spent 40 minutes on him, 19(!) hits with the paddles, flat lined 5 times. I'm going to visit him today. He got two stints (sp), was told by the doctor "drop 40 lbs. or die, 80% of my heart patients don't take my advice, they die in 24 months".

He's 3 months away from retirement. My other two brothers in blue just retired and will force him to get on track to stay around for the long haul. One of his sons has 2 years on our dept, other is about to get on FD.
Less hard stuff, less max weights, more cardio, salads,,,,and we'll still ride:thumbup:

I have several of these issues. Irregular heart beat, Weight, diabetes, stress...boat powered with a SBC, shitty Jeep. All making me feel like shit.

What I have done is stopped eating beyond 2000 calories a day and try not to make them out of balance. No fast food, Subway, or sit in somewhere and eat something calorie controlled.

I stopped drinking completely. I did not say quit but stopping Beer, which I used to live for, was a bitch. 6 Fat tires a day for 10 years....Big "fat guy" issue. I don't like lite beer. I don't smoke but have been considering getting my old water pipe down out of the rafters...LOL

Now I walk to the ball field to see my kid play. Park in the north 40 on purpose, No more coaching B-Ball because of the stress.

Eating right is a bitch. Lately finding any sort of happiness has been a bitch. That could be the LACK of alcohol for sure.

So I promised my kids I would attempt to live longer but fixing this shit (weight). Hard to break a kid promise because I will never hear the end of it.

Hang in there OC. I stopped drinking beer 8 years ago (that's all I drank) and life goes on just as it awlays did. Only, you never wake up feeling like shiat and being able to see your pecker again when showering is always a plus.

You're right - eating healthy is a pain in the ass, especially out here where I live and there are no close-by Henry's or other good vegetable markets. Searching for food to buy, preparing it and now the costs, it sucks. You're right in every aspect and don't feel too beaten down, you'll get thru it.

Except for the small block part. :p

I'm going to jump in and any offer some advise. I lost my dad at 55 From a stroke that stemmed from high blood pressure. My mother suffers from cardiovascular disease and has had multiple stents. I have a sports chiropractor clinic of 18 years and I also own a concussion management clinic.

I well aware of treatment protocols for cardiovascular disease. Dieting, stress, exercise are Wonderful advice to help. Blood pressure meds and statins start the process. But taking medications long term haven't fixed or been able to reverse to damage that's been done.

Through my research, I have come across information that has been around since 1998. Amazingly enough, no one knew about it because it wasn't highly published. A scientist named Louis Ignarro was awarded with the Nobel prize in medicine for this discovery. Other medical Nobel awards were things like, X-ray, insulin and penicillin. Ignarro discovered that L arginine is the protein that makes nitric oxide. Watch the video..

The short story is that in My practice, I have been placing patients on ProArgi9. In the majority of cases I have seen a rapid decrease in blood pressure. So far, I haven't had one patient who wasn't able to get off of statin and BP MEDS. We are now seeing that patients who take the proper dosage, are actually seeing a reversal in the damage to the vascular walls. We are seeing diabetic symptoms vanish. Patients with peripheral vascular disease is reversing. Good thing about it is that there is no side effects from taking Arginine in this form. It's actually something that we consume daily, just not in high enough doses.

In one of the videos below you will see how this stuff was used in a cardiology clinic in Apple valley. They took 35 of their worst cases and placed them on a 120 day trial with extensive testing. Watch and see the amazing results.

Losing my father and watching my mother suffer and hearing stories like yours have made me passionate about this. There are so many side effects to prescription meds. Basically fixing one thing to only create another.

There are some smart scientists out there that are doing incredible work. Just need to listen. The one question that is always asked to me is why doesn't my cardiologist recommend this to me. Dr. Siva answers that question in the video, but ultimately it's because of money.

ProArgi9 is a neutriceutical made by a company called synergy. This product is the only arginine supplement listed in the PDR.

I'd be glad to answer any questions that are posed but if it's lengthy, I'd rather you call me.

Watch and flame away!!

No flame here and you are 100% correct. Statins are bad news anyway. I would just add to this Garlic, Nattokinase and Hawthorn berry. For all around inflamation you can add in some curcumin. Also stop eating the grains, sugars and eat more fat and protein. This is where people think I am insane. Anyway, good luck.

This is being used as preventative and as a treatment. We are seeing an actual reversal of the disease process.

So I have had psoriasis for years. just small patches.

In the last year it has developed into psoriatic arthritis.

They have me on celebrex and it makes a huge difference in the pain.
I saw Bilgies post concerning celebrex and am curious about options.

I am overweight, but have perfect BP and no other negative symptoms.

What's the deal with celebrex?
