What makes a good resume? I'm applying for a new position and they told me to submit a resume and make it look good. I've never done one before but figure I'll download a template and fill it out. What stands out to you guys when you are looking through them?

Be sure you understand the position you are applying for. Learn what make a good.....(whatever). Assess your personality, find your strong points as related to the position. Reflect this in your resume and cover letter.

I've been w my current company a little over 6 years I think. Possibly more. Before that I worked for two other companies about a year each. Since being w my current company I've worked w two other companies for about a month each because we got a little slow and I didn't want to sit

Don't try to make it fancy. Use a normal font and keep it simple and easy to read. Not doubting your spelling but please spellcheck it. And have someone else read over it to make sure they don't notice something you may have missed. ;)

Someone at the meeting recommended I apply. I did eventually want to be an instructor but I guess they are really looking for someone now. I would have to go to school and get credentials. Not sure how long that takes

I was watching this series the other day called Silicon Valley.. and they were interviewing guys and reading the resumes..

One of the guys resumes said "2014 - 2016 crushing it" and the guy says "Actually I have to ammend that to "killing it." :D

I swore if I ever did another resume I'm going to use that line.. LOL

Lol. I think there's some perks. It will be more "normal" I work 6-3 or whatever and HOPEFULLY be at the Ontario training center or even Buena Park. Would be different from what I know for sure though.

I don't think I'm qualified but I'm not afraid to try. Maybe they will like me and walk me through everything? I can clean up pretty nice [emoji41]

I've run crews but no I can't really say I've ever done anything like teaching before

Having instructor experience on your resume would be helpful......place emphasis on your leadership experience and how you used it to train and "instruct" in more of an on the job setting versus a classroom setting. Your resume can be a tool to help you elaborate in an interview.

I was an instructor for 2 years, training journey level and assistant signal electricians. It is difficult training journey level but the assistants are more receptive. I guess apprentices would be the same, since they need to be there to turn out. It's a long day entertaining in front of a classroom.

There are a few instructors that work at my company. It's only 3 hours for 1 night a week. They do go to school in Michigan for a week. I remember doing work at the Santa Ana tradining center and they were teaching during the day. Must be different. The BP center looks nice and huge.

Yea it would be a full time gig. I wouldn't be in the field anymore id be at a training center 5 or six days a week. I guess long term goal would be to become a rep [emoji41]

Big problem.

If you don't believe in you, why should the employer?

My office is next to a hall. They all have brand new Dodge Rams. There's like 25 of them in the parking lot. They hang out, sit on their fat butts, puffing cigarettes out on their private smoking area, while watching tv all day.

Oh I didn't say I don't think I can do the job. That's why I want an interview. On paper I might not meet all of the qualifications.

It may be a bit of an uphill battle with no experience, but not beyond reality!

First carefully read the job opening announcement, and the job description. Pick up on key words and phrases, make sure you hit on those in your resume.

Keep it on point, task specific. Try to keep things short and to the point. Run in reverse chronological order.

Ex.

start with an overview( a brief description of yourself and your experience)

then jump into listing employers and your position, job description, and accomplishments/results

ex....

Company X,Foreman 2002-2009
supervisor, Joe blow 555-1212
provide brief job description
list accomplishments/results(bullet points)

after you listed employers for the last 8-10 years,
list your job specific training
followed by general education
then professional references (only 3)

buena suerte!

U need to Lie!
Talk yourself up as much as possible.

Safety is #1

You need to focus on what there mainly looking looking for.
Example
If there looking for a maintenance guy, talk more about maintenance and less about construction.

Don't put your age anywhere.

I was always told instructors were the ones that couldn't cut it in the field:p

I have a lot of patience...... Sometimes, but dealing with a bunch of apprentices all day, fuck that. Don't get me wrong, I'll teach you everything I know, but I gotta feel you're worth it.

No Ot or DT would suck too

Read the job description and tailor the resume to that.

Do they require organization and promptness? You are the most orginized mother fooker on the planet and "early is on time, on time is late"

The resume gets you past HR and onto the desk. The interview is where we find out if you are a lier or not so don't over embellish, but talk yourself up.

The apprenticeship model is all about Journeymen and Master craftsmen teaching, so if you have your card that is one big step.

I'd imagine there's a lot of Saturday work? I know the training centers have added a ton of Saturday classes to the calendar. I think getting into a classroom would really give my body a little break. I think it would be easier to coach my kids and make my river trips more frequent. I could probably
Take vacations without getting a bunch of crap too. I have to deal w apprentices either way. I think I would be less frustrated because we aren't being pushed.

Not sure if there are any useful lessons to be learned from a Fed resume- they're kinda unique. I will say that in reviewing resumes it drives me absolutely crazy to find spelling or grammar errors as well as boilerplate language lifted from position descriptions. There are also lists of "active" verbs you can find online which HR folks say express the same ideas in ways which are more actractive to hiring officials. The advise to get resume pro to take a look at your draft is excellent. Mostly just wanted to say good luck though. Job hunting is exhausting and only seems to get harder as we advance in our careers.

P21 gives examples of "winning words"- http://www.archives.gov/careers/jobs/forms/resume-guide.pdf

I hire quite a few people for my company. I have to review a lot a resumes. My time is valuable and I don't mess around with fluffy resumes.....

I will quickly scan the top portion of a 1-2 page resume:

1) What is this persons name and where do they live?
2) Do they meet the prerequisite educational or training requirements?
3) What is there current job and position and how long have they been employed?

If you can get through that 30 seconds of my time I will put in the effort to read what you have put in the details of your resume. If you can't effectively communicate those 3 points I toss you.

I probably won't go looking for those 3 items deep into the page or at the bottom etc...
I will pick up on embellishment and fluff and toss you into the trash really fast...
In the details of your job all I want to determine is if you already know how to do the job or if I think you have the ability for me to train you...

I am old school so the new style "I am killing it" doesn't work for me but maybe it will for someone else...

Oddly enough, even though I am pretty much old school, I might go check out your linkedin profile. You can do the "I am killing it" stuff over there and add in some personality items. If you got my attention on the resume a little effort on linkedin might give me some insight over all the other black and white resumes of other qualified candidates...

Try to keep the resume itself to one page with no mistakes on it. Many people will toss a resume as soon as they find a spelling or punctuation mistake on it. The key is to make it past that first 30 seconds.

Perfect advice by these 3, can't say anything else. Well Jimmy's line about safety is what I'd use, not the rest.
