Hopefully this will help someone else doing a Google search for this issue.
I'm in the middle of the desert, just north of Trona. There is nothing around for MILES! Truck starts running funny and dies, right as we pull up to our camp spot. I start it back up, runs fine, and I limp it to the circle and park it.
We enjoy Thanksgiving and riding and now it's time to figure it out....
Once warmed up, starts and runs perfectly, for one minute and a few seconds and dies. I call the one guy I know who is a 7.3 expert, and he tells me to check the ICP sensor. Its on the cylinder head, just behind the alternator.
I unplug it, and no more stalling. I also notice the sensor is full of oil in the connector housing, a good indication that is has given up the ghost.
My nephew rides his dirt bike into Randsburg, and gets a new sensor for me. O'Riley had one for 180.00. NAPA was 118.00 I should have known to get the one at O'Rileys...
The NAPA one was a completely different design! I had to remove the engine lifting bracket to get it to fit. Good thing I had a decent set of tools with me. It also was way too big for any of the wrenches I had! My set only went to 1", luckily I had my adjustable metric wrench with me (crescent wrench) and I was able to tighten it up.
What I noticed after I installed it...
Right at the same one minute mark, the engine would shudder for a second. The computer must do some check at that point, and readjust based on what it finds. I shut it off and restarted it multiple times, and the shudder was less every time. Maybe it's always been there?? I'm totally dialed into it now, so we shall see if it disappears completely eventually.
I'm 157 miles from home. AAA only tows 100 miles!
So..................
I'm VERY thankful to my pal @Flyinbowtie I would not have figured this out without his help!!! Thanks Jeff. You are a life saver.
