Well this season has sure been a punch in the gut.

Boating therapy is a real thing and I love it. No matter what is happening in life/business/world, being on the water just clears the head. Couple that with family memories and the excitement kids have to go on the lake, it can't be beat.

Came out early yesterday to get our new drive put on, with the plan of wife & kids arriving this evening for our first Mother's Day weekend in Havasu.

Since the boat was in for service when the drive issue developed, he finished service of motor but never fired it because drive was off.

Starts it up yesterday and immediately noticed it wasn't firing on all cylinders. Coolant was in the bilge and was coming out the starboard tailpipe.

Leak down and compression today. He said head gasket is likely culprit, so hopefully it is just a top end rebuild. Hopefully we get out for 4th at this point.

Good thing these kids keep us busy with baseball.

So sorry to hear the news Joe. I know that time on the water is so special to your family. In fact I always come away for the time we spend together smiling to see the joy it brings to your family. I hope that it is a minor issue and you are back on the water. Also if there is anything that we can do in the interim please don’t hesitate to reach out. Really ANYTHING!!!! I know that we don’t have a huge boat like @Ace in the Hole but we are willing to fill it up if needed.

That’s a bummer Joe! Was hoping to see that sled on the water this weekend.
I guess now it’s
Bring
Out
Additional
Thousands

Damn Mike, would have loved to see you guys. Didn't know you were in town.

The amount of money I have spent this season already is more than I would if we came out every weekend for the whole summer.......😕😕

Bummer but at least it's fix is underway.
Closed cooling could pass coolant to the exhaust if the heat exchanger develops a leak internally. Not trying to second guess your guy but I've seen it.

I'm on my way down to the harbor this afternoon to kiss the boat. That kiss usually means she will extract some form of unexpected coinage.

My kids are grown. I'm running out of distractions.

There's always a lighter side of grey. There's nothing quite like the kick in the balls of having everything "ready", and grenading on the ramp(did that a few years back), or in the middle of the lake for that matter. That, and it's just a broken boat that can be fixed.

Sorry to read this.
we all have ‘bad’ seasons, where the boat impacts family memories.
Sounds like your making the best of it and will be out for the 4th

Sorry to hear this... Bring the guy some good BBQ or something next time you come around, he'll appreciate it and might get fixed sooner

Definitely sucks Joe. This boating shit isn’t for the faint of heart. Takes someone that can take a wallet beating and keep bouncing back. See you back on the water soon.

Based on what I’m reading the boat was OK and you took it in for service, but then it developed a drive issue while being serviced? And then the motor has a problem now when you only brought it in for service?
Do you trust your mechanic?

Dam that blows? I got a little older ski boat if you ever have to just get out on water. Only problem is you have to come get it in long beach and she may be a little bit of a harsh ride on Havasu.

Don’t know who your mechanic is but for our boats, Barrett starts with a compression and leak down test first then if it passes that they do the service. Otherwise they inform you the engine is sick and don’t waste your time servicing it when it needs a rebuild instead.

At least that’s the deal with our boats, maybe it depends what engine package you have.

I mentioned this to Joe last night..hopefully that or a headgasket/top end Is the most of it. @OldSchoolBoats as you know after this weekend our boat is down for a month..but after that your fam is always welcome. We won't be back until early/mid June but we can always host pool days for the kids.

Thinks will work out...

Leak down results. Blown head gasket. Just crossing my fingers I don't have to do the cylinder heads.

Wow that’s a lot of sick holes.

We had one cylinder fail a leak down and it wound up being a top end rebuild for the whole motor.

When it was in for service he pulled the drive at the end and found water in the bellows. That is what found the bad gears in the drive and because drive was off, he never fired the motor. Put drive on yesterday and once it was all back together he fired the motor and could immediately tell it wasn't running on all cylinders so shut it down immediately and there was coolant in the bilge and out the starboard tail pipe. Must have hurt it during Thanksgiving weekend. Never overheated or lost oil pressure.

If it’s a blue mercruiser motor with near 300 hours or over I would recommend heads rebuilt
Agreed, valve springs and roller rockers for sure, along with pressure testing the headers.

If it is a 525 Edlebrock heads complete can be got for a pretty good price, and they made the ones you have.
